I’m asking this because a friend of mine is going downhill mentally, and he knows it. He’s having trouble making decisions and has gotten scammed a couple of times. I help when I can but that isn’t often. He’s in danger of losing his housing because of his poor decisions. He actually is interested in becoming a ward of the state since he has no family to take care of him. He can’t do this research himself. Everything I have found on the topic either discusses the responsibilities of the caregiver, or gives information about how to AVOID becoming a ward of the state. My friend can’t afford a lawyer, because his tiny income has all been scammed from him. I know he has to go through the courts, but how does he go about doing that? (I’m willing to drive him to and from court and such, but I want no part of being a guardian.) We are in California.
For an adult, who’s having this much trouble I would call adult protective services. It’s not a direct answer to your question because I don’t know how you become a ward of the state but that’s where I would start if you want someone to talk to who knows what the options are for someone who can’t take care of themselves. I’m sorry for your friend.
