TacSol Owyhee .22LR TD bolt

Price has crept from 1800 down to 1650 since coming to Australia in 2020. 1.77 kg bare weight. Drilled and tapped for an optics rail which is sold separately. Takes rugers 10/22 rotary mags. Made in Ameurica

Its nifty but it had better be reasonably accurate for the price.

What do you think?

Certainly a step up from the Chiappa Little Badger/M6 Survival Rifle school of thought. You'd want it to be a laser at that price. One in .22WMR or .17HMR would tick a lot of boxes.

It tickled my impulse button enough to grab one. Im trying to keep my expectations in check.

Let us know how it goes!

.17hmr for this would be awesome as a backpack back up for smaller game when out with a CF for pigs and whatever else.

Price needs to go down though.

BadgerBadgerCat

Way, way too expensive.

Takedown .22 rifles were incredibly common in the late 19th/early 20th century, and were designed to be cheap, cheerful, but effective. We need more of that thinking and less of the "Let's give it a tacticool stock and double the price as a result" approach.

Add “tactical” to the name ... bam! Easy money ! 😂 I remember when I bought my Remington 700, the tactical version had a slightly shorter barrel but cost an extra $250 😂😂

Working_Bass3785 [OP]

Its an innovation on other rifles in its weight class though

The reviews I've read were pretty damning. Not well built or accurate from memory.

Working_Bass3785 [OP]

I found one negative comment on a form and some tentativeness about accuracy, all other reviews and comments were positive. There isnt a whole lot of info about it out there, id say this reddit thread is about the most damming piece avaliable about it on the internet already.

$1699 @ Cleaver? I'll pass.

Makes no sense to me. I don't think I've ever been in a situation where I think, gee, I wish I had brought a takedown 22 to assemble instead of just using my compact lever 22 (BL-22).

Makes sense for some of the bigger calibres maybe like a Chiappa 1892 Alaskan in 357 mag or 1886 Ridge Runner in 45-70 or a Browning BLR takedown in 308.

I mean, if it were selling sub 1k it might be good as a novelty, but we're talking decent centrefire money here. I got a new Sauer 100 Ceratech in 270 Win from Cleaver for half the price they're asking for a takedown 22LR. Made in Germany, accurate, reliable, and weather resistant. Add a good scope, sling, and 200 rounds of hunting ammo shooting sub MOA all day every day and taking every animal in Victoria including Sambar, and we're still less $$$ than the 22.

Working_Bass3785 [OP]

Not suggesting it will shoot as straight as an anschutz or a vudoo but they're at least thrice the price. I expect it will warrant a scope more then a bl-22 too.

TheRedditornator

Well the selling point is take down not accuracy.

A CZ would outshoot this for less money.

Working_Bass3785 [OP]

And weight.

I've got one, haven't had it for long but I'm pretty pleased with it so far.

I'm pretty impressed with the quality and the design. It's clear that it was designed by just a couple of people who know their stuff, not a massive committee.

The bolt handle is tiny so it doesn't protrude out much, and it has this bearing looking thing on the handle that makes it super smooth and easy to run.

I will say it's definitely not for everyone. 95% of people probably don't need a .22LR that can take down, but if you are after a serious takedown rimfire the Owyhee is very compelling.

I've put it on paper at 50m and It would shoot less then an inch even with a red dot. I have no doubt I could've done better with a magnified optic. I was pretty surprised at first, but I remembered that Tac-Sol make upgraded 10/22 barrels so it makes sense that it shoots good.

Mine came with a pic rail in the box, and I couldn't notice any return to zero issues when taking it apart but it's always possible. The Magpul backpacker mount will fit on the Owyhee, but you just need to drill a hole in the mount to clear a pin on the rifle. That should eliminate any potential return to zero issues.

Good to hear some positivity! Hot tips, i have a 2-7x33 leupold with the Owyhee's name on it. Since posing i heard back from cleaver that the pic rail comes with, i neglected to edit. Not that it would have swayed the general consensus much. I wasnt sure what to think of a 'chromoloy' barrel, or whatever it was but despite their jarring name tactical solutions gets a good wrap. Thanks for the feedback

Name me a situation where this is more useful than a sat phone with 000 written on it…

Edit; seriously, call 000 and someone will come rescue you within 3-5 days in the most extreme circimstances.

This is just some seppo larping bullshitZ

BadgerBadgerCat

Takedown rifles are legitimately useful if you're looking for something to take camping or on a rural trip where you've got permission to shoot, but it's not primarily a hunting trip (but there might be opportunities for plinking or shooting small game); they don't take up as much vertical space as a standard rifle.

It's no different from how an SxS shotgun can be taken down (barrels detached from action) for storage/transport, and no-one thinks that's "larping bullshit".

Filthier_ramhole

Soooooo they’re basically still pointless: righr.

BadgerBadgerCat

By that logic, so are pretty much all double-barrelled shotguns, and that's clearly not true.

Filthier_ramhole

I mean the shotguns design is from an age where packability and survival were actual concepts.

BadgerBadgerCat

Not really - it's so English gentlemen didn't have to carry a full-length shotgun around with them all day. Break shotgun in half, put in carry case, nice and easy to carry around and also doesn't alarm the neighbours or the other members at your member's-only social club or wherever.

And if nothing else, a gun simply taking up less space in the boot (or even being able to fit the whole gun into a backpack or gym bag etc) is still a good thing for a shooter, even today.

Utahvikingr

Where are these made?? I have a suppressor that would love to meet this rifle.

Utahvikingr

Never mind. I’m not paying $1600 for a .22lr. I’ve got a Christensen Arms .22lr that will shoot sub 1 MOA at 100yds

Working_Bass3785 [OP]

Thats $1600 AUD

Utahvikingr

Downvotes on both of my comments by fudds who clearly wish they owned a suppressor.

ChipmunkCooties

I wouldn’t buy this.. unless you could mount the optics onto the barrel every time you had to reassemble it your zero would be out

IAMADOTISMYSTEAMNAME

Just got mine. I needed a light gun that I could put a can on and run subsonic. So this check off all the boxes
