I was looking for something in those lines for quite sometime now. I live in Brazil and have been interested with both our and northern American shamanic cultures for quite sometime now. I have had the oportunity to speak with indigenous people that have had lived with Shamans, and their ways are very interesting. Also Carlos Castañeda is a wonderful source of knowledge.
I've also smoked Petanguá, which is a mixture of different herbs used in some tribes as a "cleaning"/healing tool. And the 5. precept (plus the struggles with False Speech) is the only one I still have trouble with - not because I use any intoxicants, but because I see them very differently than many people here.
Still haven't had the opportunity to read the whole article since I am at work, but thank you very much for sharing!
