Recommendations: Turn HUD Elements Off
After playing this on the PC, I thought the "hints" were a bit too much and in your face giving you a bit more information than what you needed. So I turned off Waypoints and Discoveries and now the game feels a lot more like you are directing Colt versus having. . .someone. . .direct you.
You can still go into your Main Menu and see all the information you've gathered (or see new info when you move to another area) but this way you aren't beelining for objectives. Now it is entirely possible that this handholding is more front loaded in the beginning of the game but it still makes for a more immersive experience of you not knowing where to go (like where Dorsey Square is for example or how you might procure a battery).

I get what you are saying and I am only on the second area or so but I like it because it matches with the story for me about how your other you's are guiding you. For me there is always a bit of darksouls feeling to the message like should I trust them or not. Not to compare this with Darksouls but it's the best example of untrustworthy messages I could think of.

Oh those messages don't go away and I definitely use those as a sort of indicator if I'm in the right area. A giant floating marker though telling me that this is where I need to go was just too much for me though in a game about discovery (again this might just be early game tutorial hand holding).

Oh ok my bad I misunderstood what you were talking about, yea the diamond is a bit much at times. I would have taken a watch that just indicates still the same info less in your face.
