Be grateful with what you have: Girls und Panzer fanfictions.

Completely forgot about OC Fridays, so I'm reposting this now (saturday on the uk)

This stems from a post a user made earlier today, saying that they were "desperate for fanfiction", then complaining that "Why is there so little Fanfiction in this Fandom…?". Despite the fact that there are 839 fanfictions for Girls und Panzer in fanfiction.net, this user claimed that this was a very low amount. So I got to thinking, how does Girls und Panzer compare to other anime that are as unpopular as it is?

To measure the popularity of the different animes, I used myanimelist.net, which I think is a pretty good way to meassure how popular the series are.

Here comes the "analisis":

Girls und Panzer has 839 fanfictions on fanfiction.net. Interestingly, it's also the 839th most popular anime in MyAnimeList (what a coinkydink, huh?)

The 838th anime, Run with the wind, has a grand total of 16 fanfictions.
The 673rd anime, Brand New Animal, made by Studio Trigger btw, has 124 fanfictions.

On the other hand, checking other animes with a similar amount of fanfictions to Girls und Panzer, we have:

-Angel Beats!: 879 fanfictions, 35th in popularity
-Dragon Ball GT: 809 fanfictions, 359th in popularity
-Kill la Kill: 881 fanfictions, 59th in popularity

And then, we have some pretty big anime with barely any fanfictions:

-Kimi no na wa: 142 fanfictions, 12th in popularity
-Your lie in April: 338 fanfictions, 24th in popularity
-No Game No Life: 122 fanfictions, 21th in popularity

So, as we can see, Girls und Panzer is pretty much an outlier, its rare that for an anime this unpopular there are so many fanfictions. Be grateful for the work of so many writers, some of which participate actively on this subreddit.

P.D: Also, there are so many fucking doujins, like, an incredible amount of doujins, and a lot of them are very high quality too. I reccomend the kindergarten one, Re:Start, and Erika Change

As someone who’s tried (and failed) to write some fanfics in the past, I have to give praise to those that can not only write a meaningful story based off of preexisting characters and themes, but manage to finish their stories in a compelling and thoughtful way that the reader will be thinking about the stories told of the characters they love from a completely new direction.

I, myself, have a lot of thinks that are wrong with me, including the high potential of having undiagnosed ADHD, but that hasn’t stopped me from myself trying to write some fanfics of my own in the past and present, and I respect those that have a passion for doing things like that, because they’re following their hobbies and dreams like any other person would want to on this Earth.

All this to say, I love it when anything has fanfics to it, whether it has only a couple of tens of fanfics, or a few thousand, any fanfic entry for any piece of work, whether fictional or not, is a good thing in my opinion, and as such, GuP having nearly 850 fanfics to its name is a bloody great thing for the community as a whole. Hell, it’s something we should be proud of, as GuP is already in the top 25% of all anime communities to have fanfics with numbers like these. So next time someone says GuP has a shortage of fanfics in the community, then divert them to this post and tell em that GuP is nowhere near short on fanfics now, or the future.

Preach! It's sometimes hard to write, I have a lot of medical issues myself (currently going through tests for nerve damage among other things), and sometimes those things can impact writing ability or speed or just the effort we have to do so.

I've not added to Victoria in Cladem in a shameful amount of time (especially considering I have two other more active fanfics). But, every time someone asks me about it or I get a new Kudos on AO3 for ViC, I want to write more.

I have even been motivated by all the talk of fanfic today to open it up and start working on the next chapter!

Want to add to this, this is only the tip of the iceberg. AO3, Wattpad, and more all have GUP fics in huge amounts. Personally I publish on AO3 because I prefer the layout (literally that simple) but I know others prefer other sites.

There is absolutely not a lack of GUP fanfics, doujins, etc. I think the problem is that if the OP of that first post couldn't find one they liked maybe they need to dive deeper. If you like it, someone has probably written it somewhere.

I agree. I began reading Fanfiction very early when compared to others here (late 2023 - early 2024), but even with my short time in contact with the form; Girls und Panzer fics have been some of the absolute BEST forms of entertainment I've had in any fandom.

Reading through Dein Weg ist Mein Weg for the first time during my winter vacations in 2025 absolutely blew my mind with the amount of effort, love, and careful plot progression the author managed to put into their work. I'll try to not spoil any of the big plot points of this fic here for everyone that isn't up to date with the releases, but I vividly remember reading Chapter 47 and just being completely dumbstruck lol.

It also inspired me to write better fanfics too, and I have a Maho x Anchovy longfic idea cooking up for a while now. :)

This information is worth millions! It's incredible that a relatively unknown anime has so much content created by its community out of love. It truly inspires me to keep writing and drawing.

I Have also Creating fan fiction title called Girls And panzer A brave new world i can't send summary here but still building emotions, tension and lot more.

While this is indeed an interesting data point to consider, I think it’s also somewhat undercut by a fact that isn’t as easy to spot.

Namely, that GuP is a relatively old show, and that the fanfiction scene has shifted a lot since the show first released.

When GuP first released in the early 2010s, Fanfiction.net was still the main epicenter of fanfiction, even though it had begun its decline and the various purges that dotted its history was still in recent memory. Either way, when the show released FFN was the place you published fanfiction at.

But in the years since, fanfiction has on the whole moved away from FFN and migrated over to AO3 and to a lesser degree Wattpad, and so for a lot of newer shows it’s no surprise that there’s a lack of fics on FFN, as those communities would primarily have developed on AO3 and Wattpad.

But also setting the fact of where fics get published aside, I do think the person making the original claim has a bit of a point in that, regardless of the absolute number of fics, a lot of the fics written and published for GuP does tend to fall into the same handful of archetypes. Your ”what if boys were part of things?”, your ”what if the girls fought in actual wars?”, your ”an american team joins the fray”, your ”it’s the world tournament”, your ”what if combined arms with infantry and/or planes played a role?”.

And with that in mind, the fanfiction landscape can certainly feel like a lot smaller of a pond than it really is, as either you enjoy the kind of fics a lot of the scene is comprised of, or you don’t.

But ultimately it’s also true that fanfiction is a work of passion, not just another piece of content you can order up exactly the way you want, and if you can’t find the style of fic you’re looking for, the only solution is to pick up a pen/keyboard and get to work 🙂

This comes off incredibly homophobic. Yuri fans don't "crawl into fandoms". Also, this is literally an anime about only girls schools, and you're complaining about people saying the characters might date eachother?

Genuinely, think this is an incredibly poor take that comes off as homophobic stereotyping and complaining. Maybe you've seen some bad people, but that doesn't make everyone who enjoys LGBT content (who might not even be LGBT themselves) a bad person.

If anything, I see more of a problem with people heavily forcing for hetero stuff and "what if boys" in this fandom, but sure, yuri fans are the problem or whatever. (That is to say, I don't have an issue with people putting guys into the universe or shipping the characters with guys, I'm just trying to prove a point.)

Most_Recording848

I'd like to ask you a question, I hope it's not offensive, but how would you write a yuri romance between two characters from GUP? Without being explicit, to maintain the atmosphere of the story.

Feisty_Dish3014

I'm not homophobic I'm sorry if it came out that way but it's just that I don't really think it fits GuP and sometimes it feels forced just like the "what if boys" thing. I'm sorry if I upset you and I agree that I was too harsh

BasedReiraK

Your other comment earlier said "Yuri fans destroy everything they touch". If you're not homophobic you really need to think about what you are saying because you sound it. And, I'm sorry, but "Yuri doesn't fit GUP" is deeply closed minded and reductive.

You might not think so, but you are being homophobic.

Feisty_Dish3014

I'm sorry I don't know why I always screw up I didn't mean to upset anyone

BasedReiraK

It's okay, just try and consider sometimes if what your saying could make others uncomfortable or unwelcome. This is an anime with a 99% female cast, there is obviously going to be yuri fans here, so saying they destroy everything or force things or that it doesn't fit GUP is massively unfair.

You're clearly not meaning to be horrible, so I am sure you're a good person, just think about being more welcoming instead of pushing people (especially whole groups) away.
