Starter gone bad

I did a starter with California Ale Yeast WLP001 with my stir plate. I had to leave town for several weeks and forgot to transfer it to a sealed container for long term storage.

This was the result: https://imgur.com/a/br0Ju5q

I would definitely not pitch that. It looks Brett infected to me.

If you use this yeast so much and like it, why don't you just use US-05? Cheaper, easier to use, and it keeps for years (not weeks). Two packs for less than one pack of WLP001 and more than 4 times the number of cells, with the added bonus that you don't have to worry about aeration.

They are a little different. There's a exBEERiment on these two.

SmilingFrogBrewing

Are you trying to say that the difference makes enough to matter?

...

It's the same yeast.

I get where you are coming from, but I’ve been harvesting from my starters and getting about 4 uses out of a pack of liquid yeast. Makes the cost difference negligible

Neat!

Meh, Pitch it and see what happens.

Don't do that unless you want to infect the entire batch.

Didn't think I needed the /s on that

Sonny_Crockett123

Lol sorry. I had to look up what /s means too btw.

SuperJerryMV

The thing is, some folks here do this intentionally to a degree

Sonny_Crockett123

Why did you make a starter several weeks before you were going to brew?

HeyGuysImJesus [OP]

I was going to keep it in the fridge and do a second, bigger starter after coming back. The idea was to cultivate a lot of this yeast because I used it a lot for IPAs

Sonny_Crockett123

Gotcha. I would just get a new pack or if you have a sachet of US-05 and are looking to brew this weekend just use that.

Tranysaurus

Definitely wouldn’t pitch it. Spend a few bucks and do it again. I had a starter going for 4 days thanks to a delayed brew and it stalled at 1.040. Same yeast strain as well.

HeyGuysImJesus [OP]

I use it so much of this particular yeast. I wanted to just get a whole bunch of it for storage. Unfortunately I only have a 1L beaker so I have to do multiple stages of starters to get what I need.

I believe US-05 is the same strain, you might consider buying a bunch of it and not bothering with starters. Keeps for years in the freezer.

DSM20T

4 days in a starter is too long? Eh?

Tranysaurus

By day 4 the yeast started to die off based on the cell count I had. Still fermented the beer from 1.072 to 1.040, but I’m thinking the alcohol content in the beer killed off the rest of the weaker yeast?

DSM20T

It goes dormant tho
