[D] Potential scammer on github stealing work of other ML researchers?

I was looking for implementation of this paper
https://arxiv.org/pdf/2306.04031.pdf
so I searched for logicguide github and found this repo
https://github.com/kyegomez/LOGICGUIDE

I noticed the small number of stars but I thought it was just a new paper. I tried to run the code and got multiple error messages. I thought I was just stupid and tried to fix the errors but noticed the code look messy and some parts seem just incomplete https://github.com/kyegomez/LOGICGUIDE/blob/main/logic_guide/logicguide.py#L88

At this point, I feel like there is something weird. The repo belongs to some 19-year old https://github.com/kyegomez

I'm Kye, a 19-year-old Earthling striving to ensure the prosperity of our species, Humanity. I'm on a mission to help us reach a state of perpetual abundance in a post-scarcity civilization.

He has 153 repos with 1.5k stars, with some big projects like tree of thoughts, LongNet, Sophia, etc

I checked the issues and found https://github.com/kyegomez/tree-of-thoughts/issues/78

Clarity Needed on Claims Made by PrincetonNLP 'Tree of Thoughts' Author #78

https://github.com/kyegomez/tree-of-thoughts/issues?q=is%3Aissue+is%3Aclosed

https://github.com/kyegomez/Sophia/issues/27

Reference of official repo for the copied code #27

It seems a lot of his repos have reports that the code doesnt work.

Is this guy stealing other people's work?

Yes, basically. Delete any kyegomez link on sight. He namesquats recent papers for the clout, though the code never actually runs, much less replicates the paper results. We've had problems in /r/mlscaling with people unwittingly linking his garbage - we haven't bothered to set up an Automod rule, though.

EDIT: see also about 'tree of thoughts' https://github.com/princeton-nlp/tree-of-thought-llm/blob/03b84431d5678b3df0b4c48dabbb1f389670e8be/readme.md ; you can find plenty more about Gomez if you search, like his Discord discussions of his history of violence. Open and shut.

I'm keen to understand how anyone thought he would get away with this. We're not dumb, in the dev community.

peepeeECKSDEE

Kid obviously has delusions of grandeur. Read this article from his "company": https://blog.apac.ai/100trillion. He needs actual psychiatric help.

Normal_Breadfruit_64

It reads like an MLM or a cult trying to trick gullible people into giving free work/money. Or a really scammy startup looking for dumb investors.

thenormalcy

We have an audacious goal: to become the first AI company to reach a monthly recurring cashflow of $100 trillion.

The APAC AI Hub for Documents, Product Briefs, Plans, and SOPS, we're currently raising SAFE 100M$ at a 1Billion$

This kid has no idea what 100 trillion, or “monthly recurring Cashflow” means. Just a highly inflated sense of ego and not a modicum of how the real world works.

[deleted]

"monthly recurring cashflow" is a nonsense term.

thenormalcy

Indeed.

And “raising SAFE 100m$” at a 1 billion valuation is also straight nonsense — SAFE is a convertible and shares are not even valued unlike a straight purchase of equity. So these are just a pile of incoherent nonsense.

Amoner

That is $12 a month from every person in the world…

salynch

Seems very likely.

Edit: amazing that some comments don’t assume the obvious: that these are almost completely AI-generated repos.

[deleted]

Pretty crazy stuff like this is happening though, huh. I'm equal parts amazed and worried.

hunted7fold

Yeah, he steels people’s work. I’ve had him directly copy one of my friends repos and paste into one of his,

For example this repo (a working re implementation):

https://github.com/ManifoldRG/gato-control

Directly copied to:

https://github.com/kyegomez/CyberTron The other code in the repo is also copied from other sources

[deleted]

Your friend should consider enforcing the GPL license on his repo - he has licensed his code under MIT

[deleted]

"CyberTron", jeez

3DHydroPrints

What even is that repo of that "19 year old"? Don't get me wrong, I love to see young and passionate people, but that repo more looks like it was made by 19 people. Nice ReadMe and landing pages, but bad code. Very Odd

saintshing [OP]

Look at that contribution activity. He started getting active in March and has more contributions than Lucidrains last year.

3DHydroPrints

Yeah I saw that. Some messages read "Bla bla bla committed 23000 lines in 26 repositories" crazy. His Twitter also looks very odd. Guess he is just hunting for GitHub sponsors? He explicitly asks for sponsors in his GitHub bio

londons_explorer

Maybe one account used by a whole team of people? Perhaps in a country where github is banned?

Was curious and Googled when GPT-4's release date was - March 14, 2023. His first uptick in commits was March 18, 2023, up from his frequent 1 commits to 21 commits in a single day, within the repository called The-Domain.

Take it for what you will. All I needed to see what the commits he made in that repository and the language alone to me screams GPT. Perhaps I'm wrong and I would love to be wrong and instead he's incredibly gifted, but until proven otherwise I'll maintain my belief. His GitHub feels like someone using GPT or another form of LLM to write code and other content for them while randomly committing things like boilerplates or comments.

Kye Gomez is a prime example of a grifter, might also be clinically insane if you look at some of his content. Ignore, or report somewhere if you're so inclined.

The golden nickles epoch of machine learning right now. The number of people taking about artificial intelligence that don't know anything about it on LinkedIn right now is at a fevered pitch.

Hopefully there will be fewer of these clout chasers when AI design is in the golden age but that remains to be seen. Everyone is jumping on the bandwagon right now regardless of for much machine learning they know

spadacinnoannello

Swarms c’est un projet louche on est d’accord ? Ca sent le scam ? Kye Gomez est un escroc et s’invente une vie ? Ou c’est une opportunité d’investissement ?

LessonStudio

Beyond the potential to get caught and ruined right now, one huge problem with any academic plagiarizing is that the tools to detect it are getting better every day. Year after year.

People like this will not do this only once. Some if it will be minor, some of it will be major.

Also, if this person milks their PhD into some career of substance, all it will take is one competitor, underling, or investigative reporter to do some digging; and boom; career over.'

Here is my favourite: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guttenberg_plagiarism_scandal

That said, I have a professional pilot friend who has had "Captain STS-51-L 1986" on his resume for 30 years and nobody called him out on it once and he's worked for quite a few companies and two airlines.

new_name_who_dis_

It's a 19 year old kid so I don't think they are doing a PhD, unless they are a genius. Which it doesn't seem like they are.

leighanne7702

That is a sad thing no one looked that up - also, your pilot friend has a very dark sense of humor

[deleted]

That said, I have a professional pilot friend who has had "Captain STS-51-L 1986"

lol. If anything, this is pretty strong testimonial to always clarify the stuff on your resume and explain why it is important and hard.

[deleted]

Probably someone trying to trick some extremely rich person to invest in his "promising AI projects" with "a future monthly cash flow of 100 trillion dollars".

InternationalMany6

Sorry, no, but thx 4 asking!

cbonao69

yup now he launched a solana coin called $swarm

hokie_programmer

yeah the guy is 100% a grifter

spadacinnoannello

Swarms c’est un projet louche on est d’accord ? Ca sent le scam ? Son fondateur s’invente une vie ou c’est moi ?

I had linked to other repos. He claimed to have implemented lots of papers but most of them don't seem to work. He is using the names of these papers to mislead people. In some cases like the sophia repo, he directly copied code.

https://github.com/kyegomez/tree-of-thoughts/issues/78
Tree of thoughts authors said his code doesnt work and is probably automatically generated by chatgpt.

https://github.com/kyegomez/Sophia/issues/27

The current implementation of Sophia-G seems to be a direct copy-paste from the official repo https://github.com/Liuhong99/Sophia. I'm kindly asking to add a reference in the readme of your repo to the official implementation or please remove the copied code from the original repo!.

https://github.com/kyegomez/LongNet/issues/11

example.py does not work

https://github.com/kyegomez/Andromeda/issues/9

[BUG] [BENCHMARKING.PY] RuntimeError: No available kernel. Aborting execution.

The logicguide repo I tried also doesn't work.

new_name_who_dis_

I think what OP is saying is that if he was stealing code then it would probably work. Stealing code != having ChatGPT write your code, since you can't steal from a program.

hunted7fold

He does both things, check my other comments. Some of his repos are aggregates of others code, like a repo that has 4 sub folders where each sub folder is just different peoples code. Other repos fit the original, but autogenerated style

perspectiveiskey

It seems a lot of his repos have reports that the code doesnt work.

Is this guy stealing other people's work?

If the code doesn't work that statement is kinda vacuously false, so to speak.

I would say don't attribute to malice what you can attribute to cluelessness. Dude is probably doing this thinking he's going to change the world or something...

[deleted]

You are probably wondering why you got downvoted and think your statement has such strong logic, but you missed something very obvious: not all things are mutually exclusive, he has more than one repos, some are ai-generated, some is stolen, do you understand now?

perspectiveiskey

Before you replied to me, I didn't wonder why I got downvoted because I didn't check this message.

Now that I'm here, I'm not wondering why I got downvoted any more than I wonder why a breeze gently rattles a leaf down the street.

[deleted]

Not sure what is your point really, I will just say that the original comment of yours I reply to is, I quote from your own word: "vacuously false". I guess you gonna reply "I don't care" next.

perspectiveiskey

You're simply not making a good (core) argument - to the point that I'm having a hard time responding to it; furthermore, I do not care about -2 upvotes and the way you frame it as though it has been the downer of my day is just weird, honestly.

My original argument is simple: if someone "stole" something, my expectation is that that something a) works, and b) the person benefits from that something working because people think he made that something.

If what he "stole" is non-functional at the outset, then what are we talking about.

Furthermore, stealing ideas is an old-man Hollywood exec concept. Turning a paper's ideas into functional production code requires an enormous amount of effort.

Now the last and only point is that isn't DOA is the "name squatting" accusation. To that I have nothing to really say other than domain name squatting is as old as the internet, and none of these things are new. The world is an adversarial place. The various mimic animals in existence should be testament to this.

[deleted]

I told you the answer: he has more than one repos,
maybe not all are non-functional, but some are,
maybe not all are ai-generated, but some are,
maybe not all are stolen code (exact copy pasted), but some are.

As for whether he benefits, or does the code works, is irrelevant for whether he did it or not, at most it is about his motives.

The evidence is clear and everyone including you can have a look at his repos & blogs if you wanted to.

My main point is not whether you actually care about the downvotes or not, but the sentences after that to explain why your statement is false. I probably should not have included it and start my sentence with it, and I agree with you not caring about the downvotes.

No one is claiming what he did is better or worse than the "AI companies" you mentioned. One person doing something worse doesnt excuse another person's wrong behaviour.

He didnt just do some poor implementations. He is intentionally misleading other people and wasting other people's time. There is no way he doesn't know it doesn't work. The instruction he gave simply doesnt work and the key pieces in the code havent been implemented. He didn't just did it once. He opened dozens/hundreds of such repos. He is asking for sponsors. Look at the things he claimed on linkedin.

I mean people have confronted him in https://github.com/kyegomez/tree-of-thoughts/issues/78 and on twitter but he doubles down. I also messaged him on discord after he advertised in a server I was in and told him he should polish / get his code working before releasing and marketing, but he acted like it is fine, or if there is mistakes submit PRs and help contribute, playing it off like he’s trying his best and it’s a normal open source project which is almost ready and which will be maintained

WhiteGoldRing

"How can my code be generated by AI if I have HUNDREDS of commits PER DAY?! Checkmate!!!"

Yeah ok buddy.

3DHydroPrints

"... and the code works amazingly much better than theirs, I looked at their code and couldn't figure out how to run it for hours, as well as other people have reported the same. the motivations are jealously, self hatred, guilt, envy, inferiority complex, ego, and much more psychographic principles. And, what proof do they have that my code is chatgpt generated? I mean look at the number of commits I have garned in just half a year, 3000+ commits, with hundreds a day. They have 0 proof of this and they are just trying to discredit me and our work. I haven't answered because I am working on 40+ projects all at once The claims by the other people have no grounding in reality and it's just egotistical anger that i am better than them in every capcity."

[deleted]

He sounds like Donald trump

[deleted]

AI basically takes other peoples art and repurposed it and calls it it’s own, is this really any different ?
