Advanced Stat question

I have a rookie catcher who is having an INSANE year - he got injured and missed a month, but in the 80 games he has played he's hitting .293 with 21 HR, an OBP of .342, slugging .586, and only struck out 56 times.

Some of the stuff I don't understand is wOBA of .387, ISO .293, & wRC+ of 152.

All the blue in his advanced stats I think is telling me that this season isn't a fluke - but do I have a good hitting catcher, or a dude on track for the hall?

This is odd as well - dude's meh hitting fastballs, CRUSHING breaking stuff, and sucks against changeups (I think that's what this is telling me) - who hits curves/sliders better than fastballs?

Home field Yankee Stadium - he's a righty

Just from a rating perspective 55 babip/70 power is going to play EXTREMELY well. In my experience those two (power > babip) are the two ratings that actually have the most impact on performance while eye has significantly less. In the 2026 sim I currently have up Will Smith has 50 babib/60 power/65 eye. I would take your guy ratings wise over him and your guy is also a great defender.

Edit: Also, if you don't feel like its cheesing the AI this is exactly the kind of guy I extend right away to buy out a couple FA years.

Don’t think it’s cheesing at all, but I gotta wait a season.

Offered him an extension early because I thought it was ridiculous he’s putting up those numbers making league minimum, and all he wanted was 1 year 1.46 million.

Will try another extension early next year, see if he’ll go long term

He hits the ball hard and doesnt strike out. Also makes good contact. The advanced metrics are a little hit or miss (ootp does per plate appearances Sims not per pitch so im not sure how accurate the pitch stuff even is) I think a lot of it is somewhat simulated/ faked.

Based on the 3 advanced stats you gave though hes having an incredible season. Anything over .200 ISO is high power and wrc+ is a % stat where 100 = average and each step over is better than average by that much. So at 152 wrc+ hes 50% better than an average hitter. Its one of the best all in one stats for hitting and 152 is very high, borderline MVP - kinda one step below. Its also park/era adjusted. Just a good stat overall.

WOBA is another good stat though I dont use it much tbh as its kinda highly correlated with wrc+ so I find just looking at the latter is enough.

His OPS is enough to tell you that, if he can hit near this level for 10 seasons while playing good defense, he absolutely has a strong HoF case. His peripheral metrics indicate that he's probably legit instead of getting lucky. However...

The hard thing for a catcher is actually staying healthy for 10 years. I find that catchers get injured frequently and decline with depressing consistency before they hit 30. So if you're planning to give him a big extension..maybe try to Dev Lab his durability.

His ratings mostly support his performance. Or his performance supports his ratings. You should make decisions based on ratings if you believe they're accurate. Most stats tell you what happened but not why. Ratings tell you what should have happened.

The physics stats, EV etc, are an exception to "not why". They are based on ratings. They can be used to evaluate the accuracy of ratings. But they do not cause the outcome of the play and are not calculated from the outcome of the play.

Do not make decisions based on stats derived from individual pitches. They're simulated for flavor. OOTP calculates outcomes per plate appearance.

It tells you nothing. As in my other post outcomes are calculated per plate appearance not per pitch.
