Any Raymond Hettinger talk this year?
he’s going to be at PyCon Italia! 🇮🇹
Nice! Always learn so much from his lectures.
His name is the first I look up each time as well!
He did a lightning talk in the Saturday PM session. (Two slots after me! Starstruck.)
Edit: Oof in all my nervousness I totally mixed up Raymond and Larry Hastings. So correction, Raymond did not do a lightning talk.
Looks like at least some of the videos are up. I'm starting to make my way through the lightning talks now. Do you know which day you were?
That’d be day 2. Here’s the hyperlink: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ0-aSmn9ZA&t=870s
I'm here. Some great talks so far!
Any favourites? I really liked Langa's keynote.
That was excellent! Going to be using type hints on my next project. Other than the Keynote, the talk on Protobufs, and also the talk on Pattern matching in 3.10.
Did you go to the Python internals one?
I swung by that one, great speaker, really informative, I'd recommend finding the stream when it comes out
No, that was on my list but I ended up stopping down to the exhibit hall, had some really interesting conversations with a vendor, interesting enough that I skipped it. I'll catch that one on youtube.
Do you really have to wear masks all the time or is this just a recommendation? Even Germany which was very strict on all things COVID has already dropped mask requirements.
Dude we do except for actively eating or drinking. Honestly so fucking dumb. Then they have happy hours where no one is wearing masks , and they have another event in the same building where no one is wearing masks. Honestly, for me, has made the event much less enjoyable.
I like masks and usually wear one, but it’s been a pain in the ass. We all had to prove vaccination, and have to wear masks. I feel like it should be one or the other, especially since we’re sharing the space with another group who is totally unmasked. I hope they don’t require them next year.
if you want to wear a mask and protect yourself, thats cool. But if you’ve assessed the risk and don’t want to, I don’t think you should be required to wear one. I honestly think proof of vaccination, at this point in time, is dumb too.
Yeah but that's just not how they work. Coming in you pretty much need a good fitting N95 to work. But going out all it takes is a cloth mask to really reduce spread.
People bought tickets / signed up (non-refundable) and 'assessed the risk', which was that EVERYONE is going to be masked. Changing it afterward and saying well if your that worried you should wear a respirator because the sick people around you (most don't know they are sick, esp early on) are not even going to be expected to wear a simple cloth mask.
I went, I don't like wearing masks but I understand why. I also wore mask in crowded airport (SLC airport was dead, but not my local). Several people tested positive afterward despite the masks and vaccination. I would guess airport got them. You can be super sick, test positive and then get right on 100% booked cramped plane no problems now. No mask is one thing, but no restriction on sick people seems wacko.
100usd just to watch the live stream!!

If that's the barrier, after about a week or two, the videos will be posted to youtube and you can watch for free. In the meantime you can browse the previous conference talks on their channel as well:

Solid plan thanks

As a newbie, that seems quite steep. :X

Most of the people will have it expensed on their company I imagine

Not really. Maybe a tad little expensive but I won't call that "quite steep". Maybe they could make it 20$ for students or so.
It takes a good amount of effort and money to put something like this together - scheduling it, getting speakers, recording stuff, creating streams, creating website, and lots more logistic work, etc.
All that has to be paid for somehow.
