What kind of scam did I avoid?

Had a guy in a parking lot call me over. He had a nice sports car and a kid in the passenger seat. Claimed he was some big NFL player for the Cowboys but his card got declined while buying shoes for his kid. He certainly looked like a football player and had the nice car to go with it. He wanted me to purchase some $40 shoes at a shoe carnival store for his kid in exchange for a few football tickets for the next season. The whole situation smelled like a scam so I walked away. I looked up the player he claimed to be and it definitely wasn't him. What kind of scam was this?

You'd be out $40 and have fake football tickets. Or he tries to rob you.

It was a scam, whereby a big guy who looked like a football player and had his child sitting in a car seat and wanted you to purchase his kid some shoes. Now, wouldn't a rich football player get on his brand new iPhone and call someone to bring him some money? Why would a rich football player ask a stranger in the street?

Worse case scenario: This WAS a rich football player, who had genuine tickets to the game and his natural method was to approach anyone he could, that could help him out....

As others said, you would be out the money. Football player can't get his card to work, he has another or can buy the shoes another time.

Reminds me of the lady asking for 5 bucks because she had a flat tire. I offered to help with my fix-a-flat kit, she declined.

Seemed odd he had an expensive car though so I thought maybe his game was bigger. Something to steal my credit card or bank info.

The bums on the freeway off ramps (in my area) drive nicer cars than me.

Little bit by little bit.
