What if anesthesia during surgery doesn't actually knock you out, but just prevents you from remembering the torment you just experienced?

It also keeps you from jumping around, which is nice for the surgeon trying to operate.

That's an awful thought. One time I was having foot surgery and I woke up briefly during it, then went back to "sleep". I don't remember being in any pain but I do remember waking up. So I don't think that your shower thought is correct. But I could be wrong.

Had a quad handle bar blow clean through my leg and while they were working on it I woke up for about 2 minutes and tried my best to yell while a doctor was pulling fat and muscle by the handful out of my leg till I past back out. so I could see that had no control of my body whatsoever but I could feel everything

Ummmmm, yeah. That's actually something they do. Colonoscopies require a certain amount of cooperation from the patient.

Sometimes anaesthesia can work kind of like this. Different substances are given to have different affects. The one that makes you unconscious is different to the analgesic (painkiller) so you can actually wake up and be aware of what's happening even though you may not feel pain. Theoretically the muscle paralyzer could be the only active part and you'd be able to feel everything, know what's happening but unable to respond. Although your heart rate would sky rocket so they'd make adjustments, you'd likely not remember. Pretty sure the film. 'Awake' staring Anakin Skywalker is based around this.

Tl;dr, definitely possible lol
