Setting up a Local Server

I would like to know how to set up a local minecaft server. Essentially, this would allow me to mirror my real server, and test plugins and such without having to affect me players in my real server. Is this possible, and if so, how would I do it?

Git might be the solution that you are looking for.

It's software that allows you to duplicate projects to work on it in multiple places. Most often used for programming projects so you and your partners can work on it at the same time. Could also work for running a copy of the server and can also be used to push updates towards your server. There are many tutorials out there. I personally work with GitHub or BitBucket, but you can also run without going through a website.

Git (software):

Git (/ɡɪt/ ) is a distributed revision control system with an emphasis on speed, data integrity, and support for distributed, non-linear workflows. Git was initially designed and developed by Linus Torvalds for Linux kernel development in 2005, and has since become the most widely adopted version control system for software development.

As with most other distributed revision control systems, and unlike most client–server systems, every Git working directory is a full-fledged repository with complete history and full version-tracking capabilities, independent of network access or a central server. Like the Linux kernel, Git is free software distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License version 2.
