Since we're in a recession, what are some inspiring success stories during difficult times (i.e. the Great Depression)?

It isn't a very optimistic world we are living in today and the media doesn't help painting a better picture either. But I'm sure there are good lessons to be learned from recessions in the past, and there are opportunities lie in the corner. I just don't know where to start.

Can you folks recommend some books/articles on entrepreneurs struggling and succeeding (or failing) during the Great Depression, and also on industries in general in the the era of Great Depression.

I want to gain insight into this era on both micro and macro levels. So any material you think can help me would be really appreciated. Thanks!
