Pumped for the DoW: DE Release!

52 points · submitted Aug 2025 by u/fivemagicks

I'll never forget booting up the DoW demo back in the day as a kid. I wasn't familiar with 40K and initially thought it was a ripoff of StarCraft in some sense. Though, I knew eventually it was StarCraft - more or less - ripping off 40K. My cousin booted up his Gateway up in Wisconsin, and my brother and I down here in TX booted up our rig to play each other online.

My brother passed on just five years (almost to the day) after the release of this game. He wasn't a big RTS player, but we had some fun memories playing this and Counter-Strike (of course). It will feel a little nostalgic and sad to boot this up, but I'm happy to have this chance to do so along with all of y'all.

And yes, I hear the voices, too

I’ll be there on launch day! Driving around in my chaos rhino, lest the berzerkers threaten to kill me

I didn't really give this new edition much thought until the last few days, but my friend has been hyping it up and yes it is quite interesting to think about. I think before DoW we never really had any great 3D games that took place in WH40K, so for most of us it was the first time seeing all the tabletop units animated, moving, and full of character.

I'm sorry to hear about your brother. That must have been tough. Hoping there's an infinite LAN party going on wherever he is now.

I appreciate the kind words, man.

I was about 8/9 playing the demo nonstop. It got me into 40K, 20 years later Im still playing 40K tabletop and pen and paper.

That's really cool, man. It's an incredible, chaotic universe. Curious if we really are going to hear about a DoW4 this next week.

I've still been playing the classic DOW1 to this day lol, love to a do a re-run of the campaign. Its such a solid, classic RTS.
