Do large scale personalized catalogue/recommendation sites use anything special as database?

I'm researching options for a fairly large site with a ton of lists and content steams that are personalized based on user profile and subscriptions.

Kinda like what YouTube does with the lists on your personal profile; it shows various lists with recommendations, activity in subscribed channels, watch-later/watch-again list etc.

This means you'll have to do quite a lot of querying to select all those items for this particular user, possible weighting various factors and histories.

We can do all this in regular PostgreSQL but is that optimal? Seems a lot of dense queries.

Are there any other (mature) databases that work well for this? For example we can do fairly interesting custom solutions in redis, or maybe some lesser known database? Maybe a graph database because it is about the weighted relations?
