From Mattermost to multi-homeserver Matrix

I'm researching the possibilities of migrating our company from Mattermost to Matrix. One of the reasons is that we have various small locations in North & South America, and only one Mattermost server.

I would like to have multiple Matrix homeservers so that outages at a given location aren't disruptive. The locations are small, with only 1-12 users per location. Each location already has a server that could host a homeserver.

Will Matrix scale out well with 2 dozen homeservers, or is that the path to poor performance? Would it be better to have 4 homeservers somewhat clustered by region instead of location?

I'd be glad for any tips / suggestions on deploying a system that's as decentralized as possible.

We're a company with ~30 employees, and due to people having matrix homeservers themselves, we ended up having 2 dozen servers in lots of our rooms anyway. Works perfectly fine, doesn't make any trouble.

As long as you can get certs and setup the federation, it should be very viable!

And the only thing that would make me recommend fewer is to ensure your domains are stupid long lol

Checkout dendrite or conduit if those satisfy your needs. They lack some features but are so much more performant than synapse.

Thanks for the suggestion; but they both lack presence, which is more than my team would be willing to give up.
