Can you mix halves from different split PCBs?

Hi , ortho newb here...

Can I plug a BFO right side PCB into a helix left side PCB, or vice versa?

Bonus question: Can I just use one half of a keyboard? Like only a left half PCB for gaming. If so, does that only work with the master side controller?

I don't have these things, so I can't try it, otherwise I would just do that. TIA

You will only be able to connect different halves if

1)you modify the firmware for both boards yourself. 2)the trrs cable is wired the same way in both. This isn't at all guaranteed.

You can generally use either half on it's own if they both have a USB port, but the slave side may require a firmware change.

Could just make them both masters and run as separate boards right?

Wizarddata

Yep, except layer changes would be per side in the case.

Could you please explain what "per side" means in that context?

Wizarddata

If you hit a button to change layers on the left half, it will only change layers on the left half if both left and right are compiled as masters.

I want to had that you could synchronize the two halves using a raw HID communication between each and the Computer, but that's work

I like this idea

And if the cable is not wired the same way, you could try to use a multimeter or follow the schematics and make your own.

I can't answer the different split question, but most splits can be set up so that you can choose to use only one half or the other. My SP64 doesn't but the other half doesn't have its own MCU. My Kyria does because each side has its own dedicated MCU.

FalbaTech actually sells halfs of split keyboards (such as ergodox) as gamepads. I'm not sure if they are modified in any way.
