4770K Excessive Power Draw? Looking for a second opinion.

Specs:

  • i7-4770K @ 4.4GHz with 1.28v VCore, everything else left to AUTO.

  • Gigabyte GA-Z87N-WIFI mITX motherbaord, 4pin CPU power.

  • Corsair RMx 650W PSU.

180W draw during a stress test (IntelBurnTestV2). Reviews I'm seeing online tag the 4770K at ~110W-ish at stock, but I can't seem to find any reviews for the overclocking power draw. My brother is convinced that 180W is bonkers for a non-LGA2011 CPU.

Thoughts? Concerns? Should I buy a fire extinguisher?

My 4770k is at 1.26v at 4.2 can't oc more because it's hitting 80c and it is drawing 150watts in IBT. Also yes, a fire extinguisher would be good. Depends on your temps though, of they don't go over 80c they you should be okay.

What cooler do you use?

Noctua NH-D14 with MX-4 thermal paste

Wow, that hits close to home. I can't go any higher than 4.2 since it requires a bit more voltage and gets close to 90c.

Stop running linpack.

Sounds normal. Don't run linpack/p95 on haswell.

I think I've broken 200w before, and that's on an i5.
