There is no added value in using such small DoF with this subject. You like the effect, but the result is a mostly blurry image. Quite unappealing (restless/shaken feel) to look at. Focus more on compesition/viewinglines/exposure instead of an specific effect of a lens.

Thank you for the critique! I really appreciate it.

I finally got a 50mm+adapter for my m50 and while trying it out, I started learning about how depth of field works. I'm pretty sure this is at f1.8. I like the line from the rock and how that is the only thing in focus. I am not a photographer, I'm a programmer getting into photography. Is this depth too narrow? Should I have narrowed my aperture? I have not edited this photo at all, it is just straight through the camera.

As a side note, I love the 50mm 1.8 stm. It really forces me to get in close. I just worry that I'm using this lens incorrectly and im dwelling too much on a narrow depth of field. How else should I treat this lens? I have used it quite a bit since I've gotten it. It has basically become my main goto lens. My kit lens seemed so much easier to use, but the results of this lens, I feel, create so much more artistic impression.

I would just keep making pics. There really isn’t much too say about a small rock you found and shot at a narrow depth of field. :) The 50mm on a crop camera like yours is good for portraits, but I think it is a bit tight to shoot for much else. If you are interested it close-up photography, you may like a macro lens as your next purchase. As you are a programmer and based on this pic, I would think you might enjoy getting a little scientific with the photos as the macro lens will allow. I often tell people to photograph what you love or what is important to you as a good starting point.

Right on! Thanks for the feedback! I'm looking at some glass. Do you have any suggestions for a lens that wont break the bank? Maybe under 400?

Also, I'm still in a phase where im trying to explore what kinds of things I like to shoot. Personally, I find mundane objects that no one notices to be interesting. I think going into putting this image up for critique, I was really after how others perceive shallow depth of fields. I now understand that it does have its limits. The picture above just mostly being blur

Thanks again!
