Sway not splitting current windows horizontally or vertically

I've noticed that Sway is not splitting windows vertically or horizontally when I hit my default keys for these actions. My set keys for this behavior is mod+v and mod+z respectively. Has anyone ever experienced this?...also, I don't have any other keys mapped to these bindings...

I think I figured out my own problem so hitting those keys doesn’t necessarily open the same instance of my current window in a vertical or horizontal manner…it just means that if I DO open another window it will open either horizontally or vertically lol
