I wanted to come here and ask about SAO, piggybacking on this instead of making some shitty thread. I watched the first season of SAO and it was great. Wasn't perfect, but it was good. Seasons 2/3 was awesome but once Desu Gun was out of the picture... there's no stakes any more? Now they're just playing a game. I wasn't really invested after that. People are hyped about Alicization though, apparently. Does SAO pick up and get good again for some reason? Do Kirito and Asuna still continue to act as though they were never "married"? It felt like that relationship fizzled out back when I left off watching it.

Did you finish SAO II? Mother's Rosario (the final arc of SAO II) isn't so much of a typical conflict arc with a villain like the previous arcs were, sure, but it tackles plenty of serious themes.
Calibur (the short arc where they get the sword in ALO) is the only arc that makes you feel like the stakes are kind of non-existent, and it does this because it's a side story that was never meant to be as serious as the main arcs of the series.

Alicization is widely considered to be the best arc of the series. (I should note that it's also the longest arc, longer than all the previous arcs combined.)

I would say "no", but then I don't really understand why people feel like this is true. After the first season, two things happen to their relationship:
They come out of the honeymoon phase of their relationship, and start acting more like a couple in an established, long-term relationship (which they now are) than a couple that just got together. This naturally means they're going to be a lot more subtle about expressing any feelings they have for each other, especially in public.
Their relationship simply stops being as much of a central focus for the series as it was in the first season. It's still there, of course, but the story is more about bigger things they get involved in, rather than revolving around their relationship itself.
So no, they definitely don't stop being an obvious couple, but you'll be disappointed if you go into Alicization expecting it to have a laser focus on their relationship, like some parts of the first season did.
Ah I remember now, it was that Calibur sidestory that kinda lost me, I didn't continue after it finished. I appreciate the reply, I think I'll jump back into SAO and get caught up.
If you want more focus on KiriAsu's relationship, you can watch the movie Ordinal Scale.
It is mainly about them and it also takes place before of Alicization.

Watched the LLENN spinoff, absolutely loved that.
