Crashes with Intel 13900K

Ladies and gents. I've come seeking help to manage my frustration with the turn crashes in TW:W3. I know this is an issue with the 13th and 14th gen Intel processors.

I've followed the latest Intel BIOS settings and even went with "Performance" versus "Extreme". I still get crashes. It genuinely saddens me, man, because I played tons of TW:W2 on my old rig.

Anyone have this issue and solved it? Do the dark gods need to intervene?

I've attached said Intel recommendations sheet for reference. Will also post to the Warhammer specific sub.

When troubleshooting crashes, always set Hardware to baseline/Normal vales (vs Performance/Extreme, that pumps up the voltages)).

Keep the voltages low, and see how it performs.

Edit: If possible, limit your CPU to PL1 (125 Watt) and then check stability.

I appreciate the response. Was hoping for at least several! I'll try this.

Our American friends will be waking up in an hour or so, so you might get more.

Also, please note that RAM stability (speed/timing/voltage) also factors into overall System& CPU stability. Sometimes XMP profile also plays a role.

Make sure you're using one from the Qualified Vendor List for your Motherboard.

If you are crashing you can lower the multi in Intel xtu until it stops crashing. I'm at x53 on all cores on my 14700k and it finally stopped crashing. Also set the baseline specs if possible. The other two profiles (performance, extreme) need better cooling like an aio and create a ton of heat.

How do you do this? I've seen this and feel ignorant as hell.

Did you also check your cpu temp ?

I have a 13900KF myself and even with an AIO + 11 fans, my CPU went up to 100° degrees in Warhammer (was the only game that did this btw, no other CPU intensive game ever pushed my cpu to this point).

I did multiple things (not just for WH) and you should maybe try them, I don't know which one helped the most :

- Set the maximum fps of the game through the Nvidia Panel to 60

- Update bios

- Undervolt if your CPU can take it (mine wouldn't)

- I switched from the basic mobo frame to a thermalright contact frame

- Reapplied thermal paste

I went from random crashing in the end turn / BSOD / 100°+ to no crash, no bsod and max temp of 80° in WH, barely 60° in other games.

I hit 100C, as well. Genuinely infuriating that Intel would release products like this.

[deleted]

That is too high, and may be the problem. It's self-throttle territory at the minimum and would reduce the lifespan of the chip. Generally temperature is the first thing you'd check, since it's easy to monitor.

fivemagicks [OP]

I know this is an issue with the 13th and 14th gen chips. Sounds like there's really not much I can do programming-wise and may need to RMA (if possible), change thermal paste, etc. Just not sure.

Edit: Apologies. I'd already responded to a comment you made with something similar. Lol

[deleted]

The voltage degradation issue and temperature issues are separate problems. You could solve the temperature problem by investing in a stronger CPU cooler, and that may or may not solve the crashes.

fivemagicks [OP]

Are those pretty easy to change out?

[deleted]

Generally yes. If the system is pre-built by a company that uses custom parts like Dell/Alienware, then it could be more complicated.

fivemagicks [OP]

Got it from Cyberpower back in May 2023.

Setting an fps limit of 60 for Warhammer will certainly help getting those temperature numbers down.

fivemagicks [OP]

Thanks, man. I'll try this!

The Intel 13/14th gen stability issues are the result of permanent physical damage to the CPU due to excessive voltage. Dialing down the settings can help reduce the frequency of crashing, but if it's already affected then it will likely get worse over time regardless. I don't know what the RMA process is like for chips affected by it. Obviously Intel is going to minimize replacing affected chips, because the scale of the problem is too massive for them to do otherwise.

Obviously when there's a crashing problem it is not necessarily the 13/14th gen Intel chip at fault, but there's a significant probability of it being the problem and it's very hard to prove either way. Easiest way would be to swap out the CPU with a new chip, but that's not feasible for most people.

fivemagicks [OP]

Man. I feel like we all got hoodwinked and really turns me off of Intel. Is swapping to an AMD possible, or would I have to scrap everything? I'm fairly ignorant to PC building, btw.

[deleted]

We haven't verified that the CPU is the actual problem, so it's hard to recommend any particular course of action.

To swap over to AMD, you would have to replace the motherboard as well, and you likely don't have an AMD-compatible mounting bracket for the CPU cooler. It sounds like the cooler may need to be replaced regardless. You could possibly reuse the RAM if it's DDR5 instead of DDR4.

I'd recommend reinstalling Windows when doing a CPU brand/motherboard swap. Windows 10/11 can do the conversion and it should just work, but the risk of running into weird OS-level issues is higher than a fresh install. That could mean buying a new storage drive if you don't already have multiple SSDs.

You're looking at significant money over a replacement CPU, but a 9800X3D would actually be an upgrade in many CPU-bottlenecked games, so there's that. You'd have to look it up on a game-by-game basis. With the fixes that Intel has done, it would be arguably be better to just have the chip replaced. If you don't do content creation then the 13700k would perform identically and have better thermals.

I really appreciate your input, man. I'll try some smaller tweaks first and see what happens.

I have similar issues with crashes on my intel CPU, I think I might even have the same one you do. There is an official app called Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and it allows you to change some settings without going to BIOS, but the only thing that matters here is a thing called performance cores. By default for me it was 57 and changing it to 55 fixed an issue, but when I heard about the advice it was mentioned that 54 is usually the way. I hope that might help

I'll look into this!

Still struggling on the turns in single player; however, I have not tried to adjust the AC Load Line as described in this lengthy but helpful Reddit post:

Going to try this tonight after work!

I'll tinker with this tonight and let you know.

So, I changed the AC/DC LL to 0.5 ohms. Didn't change the VR out to 1.4. Had a crash even in the menus of TW:W3. Changed the VR out to 1.4 and didn't have any issues after that. Didn't play for that long, though.

Will try it tomorrow and update.

ASUS. I see people mentioning Performance Cores. Would those have any effect on the issue, and are they managed thru BIOS as well?

Awesome! I'll check that out

misteryk

If you already crusing on 13900k no amount of updating bios and changing settings will fix it. It's permanently damaged it'll only get worse from here. only way to fix it is to RMA the CPU

fivemagicks [OP]

My computer is two years old. Am I still able to RMA the CPU?
