Pope Pius IX (approved of DC obelisk) made the first papal visit to U.S. territory on August 1, 1849, when he boarded the USS Constitution while it was anchored in Gaeta, Italy. He was accompanied by King Ferdinand II (Bourbon 2 Sicily’s) where Captain John Gwinn, honored both with a 21-gun salute.
