Most valuable parts of Africa?

New to the game. Generally speaking, what parts of Africa do you guys prioritize in the scramble? Or is it mostly a game of getting as much as you can rather than targeting specific parts?

As an aside, how much of an impact do African colonies even have economically. Is it actually worth going out of your way to get a piece, or is it more the principle of the matter? I'm Germany in my current game and I think the biggest impact might be the extra naval bases it let me build.

But, ...but Carthage must be destroyed

Are you playing vannialla or with mods ?

Generally taking out sokoto the one african nation all alone in the base game gives you a good jumping off zone to get the rest of Africa

I'm just doing the base game right now. I haven't done a hardcore colonizer yet. I've done a Japan, a China, and am in the middle of a Prussia-> Germany run.

With Japan I took out Arabia and managed to get most of East Africa. But it felt like my money came from conquering China.

I ignored colonizing with China.

And in my German game I got most of West Africa. But I'm Germany, so the colonies feel more like a bonus.

First and foremost, Benin and the Niger Delta. That's where most of the world's rubber will come from - always useful, even for, say, a China run. It's the near-guaranteed way to monopolize the electronics industries (as long as you consume more rubber than you produce), which is highly profitable.

I'm somewhat partisan for colonizing Somalia. A non-colonizing Portugal (which is common) combined with Somalia colonized means you're able to lock down Eastern Africa, including the quite lucrative Uganda state (cotton!).

Skip most of Western Africa - too much competition, too few good resources/pops. Lock down everything East of Benin (via Sokoto to Darfur is a good way), and you're set for having all the juicy stuff.

One caveat: British South Africa. It's the one way through which your plans can be foiled. If you can take them on, cut them off!

Gold/Ivory coast is good. High population, many small existing states so you don't need to wait colonization technologies.

I also liked being able to cram in an extra 6 naval bases
