Couldn't have said it any better.

I really try and compartmentalize these experiences. Which is hard to do. I see a few dogs around the city quite a bit and they RUN to me which is the best. But I'm so happy for them and their new families. One day I won't bring one of these dogs back to the shelter. I know it.

First, and most importantly, Grits was adopted into a loving family shortly after we posted this video!
But this was a really special ride. Grits is a tripod who was recently hit by a cyclist and had to have her leg amputated. But as you can see in the video, it hasn’t affected her one bit.
I had a really hard time leaving Grits because she was truly one of the sweetest, most curious, most loving dogs I’ve ever met in my life.
Have the best life, sweet girl 🧡

She's a puppy and hasn't had all her vaccinations yet so couldn't walk her in the park.

When I get to the shelter I spend time with the dog. I get a feel for their body language and how they act. I also get them really comfortable with me. We take our time getting into the backpack and I make sure they're comfortable. In about 60 rides there was only one dog who wasn't happy being in the backpack, and I knew as soon as we got them in. In that situation we just took the dog out of the backpack.
Otherwise once the dogs are in they love it. They're snug and really close to my body. The bag was designed to act like a thunder blanket so it's very calming for them. And I make sure my attention is solely on them and their body during the ride.
But yeah, it's all been really cool to see how many dogs, some with traumatic histories, really take to being toted around in a dog backpack.

I'm so happy to report that shortly after this ride, Moo Deng got a FLOOD of applications and was quickly adopted into a loving family within several days!
Moo's Backstory: Moo Deng came to Best Friends after being rescued from the street. She was found with a laceration along her back but we are not sure how she got it. Thankfully it has fully healed and it seems like there are no prolonged issues or sensitivities associated with it!
Attached is a recent photos of Moo Deng living the good life with her new family!

Last week I took Missy on an adoption ride, and for the first time, after over 60 adoption rides, we got Missy adopted ON THE RIDE while we were waiting to get her pup cup.
Steve was behind us in line, and you could tell the connection was immediate. Several people in the comments actually called it out after seeing a shot of Steve and Missy that was no longer than 2 seconds.
Several days later I met Steve at Bideawee so he could formally adopt Missy, and bring his little girl home.
Congratulations to Steve and Missy, and thank you for letting me be a part of the beginning of your journey together ❤️

Hey! So every dog you see in the backpack, it's their first time in the backpack. When I meet the dogs I spend time with them beforehand so they get comfortable with me before our ride.
And there have been some dogs that have showed signs of nervousness at the start of the ride, and I adjust things to ease them a bit more slowly into it and ensure they're comfortable and they always calm down and settle in. To be honest it's been really surprising and eye opening to see how quickly a dog will acclimate and become more comfortable in situations that seem initially stressful.
The backpack also acts like a thunder blanket so all the dogs love it. They're nice and snug in there.

HUGE NEWS!! THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN OVER 60 ADOPTION RIDES THAT MISSY WAS ADOPTED ON OUR RIDE! Can you guess who adopted her??
Also, a little bit about Missy - Missy had been going through something called “kennel breakdown,” or “kennel stress.” It’s what happens when a dog spends too long at a shelter and starts to unravel a bit. Even the sweetest pup can lose it after enough time in a loud, cramped kennel. It can look like pacing, spinning, chewing the bars, or the total opposite, going quiet and hiding in the back like she’s in her villain origin story. Some dogs stop eating or lose their shine.
Well, the second we left the shelter, as you can see all of that stress melted away ❤️

Hey! I always tell people if they have a dog with IVDD or signs of IVDD to bring the backpack to your vet or specialist

Linda was from Bideawee (location in Chelsea) and I do a lot of work with Best Friends Animal Society!

You'd be surprised. we've had cats in the backpack and they love it. Same with bunnies and a goat lol.
And the name comes from when my wife and I had our first pet which was a cat named Bella. Rest in peace.

Linda's story really broke my heart.
Linda is 1.5 years old, and she was surrendered by her 65 year old owner who developed a medical condition and could no longer care for her.
And I'm so happy to report that shortly after this ride, Linda was adopted by a loving family 😭
Have the best life, sweet girl. You deserve it ❤️❤️❤️

Might be the nicest compliment I’ve ever gotten
