Thanks for the honest criticism, and while I disagree with some points I do agree about it being important to show when the value drops. It's more a technical limitation now than anything as the tools I'm using aren't really made for it.

The total value of all US residential homes is around $36 Trillion, so still a little ways to go... give it a few more weeks I guess.

Any feedback is welcome. It's the first time I tried making a time map so I know there's lots to improve on.

Not exactly, this is just looking at ever residential property within a zip code. Each zip code will also, normally, have things like commercial, industrial, or government owned land as well. That's not counted here.
So I'm using the boundary for the zip code but you couldn't actually buy 100% of the land in that zip code as some won't be residential.

You are correct, the zip codes will have other things in them other than residential properties, like commercial or industrial properties, parks, schools, roads etc. But you can't get more detailed data on home sales (at least publicly), it's all aggregated up to at least the zip code level.

New to reddit, so not sure how to make a text post explaining this, so I guess I'll just make it as a reply...
The post was made in ArcMap and uses data from the US census bureau, and housing data from zillow, specifically the Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI): https://www.zillow.com/research/data/
