The PA-24 has been my goto for a couple years. I got the IWS-3220M as well, but I find myself preferring the PA-24 because it's easier to get the crimp seated in it without the wire slipping out.

They have two different SKUs for with and without antenna.

jackerhack

Legit, but there's no antenna in their SKU. Add 868 MHz antennas to your order.

I didn't back the Zero because it's based on RPi0, which doesn't have a low power standby mode. Who wants to wait for Linux to boot every time?

Q: Does Q fix that?

In Bangalore we have a rule that at least 25% of all roads must be dug up at all times. If people are not inconvenienced by on their daily outings, they'll think the city is decaying and the Bangalore bubble will collapse. The state government can't risk that.

Politicians measure their worth by how much digging has happened on their watch.

Even our new GBA minister's first priority was to dig up footpaths because people were getting comfortable using them, and comfort is decay.

What customer experience? Just look at the comments in this post.

That's HiDesign. The stitches on those handles won't last a year. One cut and it'll unravel end-to-end.

Those are not brands I'd trust my gear with. Look up Peak Design, Matador, Able Carry, Tom Bihn, Aer, Bellroy, Evergoods, Alpaka and Osprey.

jackerhack

Have you looked up the prices of any good international brand?

jackerhack

₹2k bags are costly??? Good bags have cost upwards of ₹20k for at least the past decade.

Not a native speaker either, but AFAIK seven is still ēḷu, while Hēḷi / Hēḷu mean "tell" or "say".

jackerhack

How come they're not cutting internet cables? Who paid them off?

jackerhack

I'm terrified to disrupt my finetuned Termux setup with this, but it's so tempting.

jackerhack

Keepa says the single strop kit price has increased from ₹1294 to ₹1297. But fuck it, add to cart.

jackerhack

What, someone made a Termux launcher? The home screen is a command line now?

jackerhack

When did Termux get image rendering support?

Look up Journey to the West, a 16th century novel that is a wee bit like the Ramayana in that it narrates an epic journey featuring a monkey. Roughly the same time as Shakespeare and with similar influence in Chinese culture.

That's the difference between a democracy and a republic. A democracy is vote-based but biased to majoritarian interests. A republic works for the people, and votes are just proof of public interest, not the basis of legitimacy. It is possible to be a republic without a democracy and a democracy without a republic. The ideal is to have both as mutually balanced structures.

India has had such a huge cultural influence on Southeast Asia for thousands of years, yet how did it never end up permanently incorporating even a single piece of Southeast Asian territory into India itself?

From my limited understanding, assimilation happened via the caste system, but the mechanism didn't scale. The initial varna system was a three-way split between priests, warriors and peasants. Then it split into four over internal conflicts. Then it encountered further resistance and coped with a secondary matrix called jati, with mind-boggling gridlock of caste-location negotiations that still hasn't gone away. Today we have modernised the discourse into "reservations" with colourful vocabulary like "creamy layer" and "other backward classes", where the "other" is actually the majority and "cream" is an accusation of insufficient backwardness.

Caste is the only assimilation mechanism we developed, which is why Indian diaspora keep reproducing it wherever they go. It's also utterly useless against any other well organised culture and got routed within India twice, first by middle-eastern Islamic social order, then by European Christian social order (although post-Enlightenment European order presented itself as secular, not religious).

India has never had a period like the Renaissance, Enlightenment or Cultural Revolution. No moment of serious shock that prompted a total reform of the social order. Our best opportunity came with Independence and a Constitution that deliberately favoured a strong central state tasked with social reform, but lacking sufficient protections against hijack. That led to an Emergency once, but the patch was half-hearted. And then we got the current regime.

TL;DR: Aadhaar's foundational id premise was always a joke because mobile numbers are the true foundational id. Aadhaar no likely, so they want to be foundational to mobile numbers too. Now you need a mobile number to use Aadhaar and you need Aadhaar to get a mobile number. Aadhaar likey-likey.

I got it as a travel daybag but found it my benchmark for an EDC. Nothing looked good enough, so I figured I'd try putting a laptop sleeve in it before blowing money on anything else. That worked.

jackerhack

The Daybreaker 2 is my current EDC. It's super-light, very comfortable, and surprisingly spacious. It's also very short on actual organisation, but I've found that a padded laptop sleeve with its own organisation solved the problem just fine. (If anything, I'd have liked one more outside-accessible quick access pocket.)

Your unbiased review system is going to work as long as it has no real impact on anyone's business. After that, everyone's going to find a way to game it. Take your two starting premises:

  1. Verified GPS check-ins: Satellite location is received by the phone and unverifiable from your server. All you get is the phone's submitted opinion of where it thinks it is, and Fake GPS apps are a legitimate category of apps listed in the app store. What are you going to do now, police what other apps are installed like the banking apps do? How do you convince users to install your spyware now? This isn't trivial, look up the Ola fake driver scam that became the basis for every ride hailing app requiring a PIN to start the ride.

  2. Bill/Receipt uploads: Why would I let you profile my dining habits? And what stops a restaurant from printing fake receipts for the gamification? Small eateries may not even have a billing counter because they're a two-person chef and server operation. They get no verified reviews in your system now?

But that is a normal state of things in Asia.

I'm reminded of this quote:

“The United States is also a one-party state but, with typical American extravagance, they have two of them.” – Julius Nyerere
