Should I stain this - or leave as-is?

I'm building a flowerpot rail as a gift. The dowel is pretty cheap - just 20mm pine. I can't work out if a darker stain would make it look a bit nicer - or I should just leave as is (looking around I see a bunch of mixed comments on whether staining pine is worthwhile or not.)

Complete novice and don't have a particularly great eye for these things - so happy to take any suggestions!

Finish it in oil based poly. It’ll look great. I like total boat spar finish for this stuff because you can apply all the coats in a day and can confirm it holds up very well. I’d attach a picture of my coffee table but I can’t.

Thank you!

Of course, if you were local I’d let you use my tent but brush it on and you’ll be good

Maybe it’s just me, but if I ever have to ask myself this question, the answer is always boiled linseed oil. Danish oil if I’m feeling fancy.

As another absolute novice, I second the linseed oil advice.  Just made my first worktable out of pine and listened to these guys about using BLO; brought out a beautiful honey color i was very satisfied with!

A birch dowel wil cost you only a couple of bucks more, and it would look beautiful natural
