Arsenal are 86.91% likely to win the Premier League (according to my calculations)

I’m about to get severely downvoted, but rest assured, my methods were extremely scientific.

First I googled the probabilities of the outcomes for each of Arsenal and City’s remaining games, and took the top Google result for each game (sites were Opta, gamestatistics and data something).

Then I mapped each of the 81 different outcomes to a probability tree and calculated the probability for either team coming out top on points, and the probability they would finish on equal points.

For equal points, I then googled the probability that Arsenal win on goal difference vs City. The site I ended up on (first Google result) adjusted so that the probability was only in the case that points were level at the end (e.g. if City lose matches, drop goal difference, but also don’t end up level on points, that probability isn’t considered in the goal difference probability, which was ideal for my calculations since it is already considered in the points leader probability).

In the event that goal difference is the same, City pretty much just win in that scenario, since they already have more goals for, and a better head to head record).

So for the outright winner, City take most of the share of the 11% from finishing on the same points, however, Arsenal still end up with 86.91% likelihood that they will win the Prem.

I’ll think about it

I mean, intuitively without any analysis OP’s figure sounds about right. Arsenal will probably steamroller Burnley tonight, City then have to come up with a win at Bournemouth (on a 8-8-0 run in the PL!!) just to keep it going. And then, if it gets that far, City have to better Arsenal’s result.

I’d put City’s predicament on a par with West Ham’s chances of staying up over Spurs.

I can see us dropping points at Palace.

41% to be fair

Only if Glasner crumbles under the media pressure, fields his strongest XI and tells his players to go for it.

Does not Crystal get 10 mil pounds if we win the league?

Probs have the same clause for Guehi I would imagine? So it won’t make a difference.

What’s interesting is if you look at what is actually likely to happen based on recent form, City winning the league is far more likely than 10 percent.

If you said Arsenal would draw away at Palace nobody would bat an eyelid. It’s not a gimme by any stretch.

just fyi, we are x% likely to win the league doesn't really work in english., 'likely' is already a quantitative/probabilistic judgement (i'd say >65% but that is just my gut-feel-definition)

based on pure scientific facts it's a 50-50 chance - either we win it or we don't, same as the cl final ;)

e: I stand corrected, I am going to go with Sir Terry and say it is a 1000 to 1 chance - but it might just work

BombsGoBang [OP]

Thank you for this. I’ll play the lottery a lot more often knowing it is 50:50

If you're right, then you have outsmarted the bookmakers.

His number is actually almost identical to Opta's number. Bookies are not way different either, are they?

Bet365 currently has Arsenal to win the league at 2/11. Thats a 84.6% implied probability of Arsenal winning the league.
