This Tesla landed on my 2014 Subaru XV and pushed it outta the spot. If there's frame damage, is it repairable or the the type of thing where insurance will just total it?

Way way too many variables. You won’t get a valid or even close to valid answer from social media. Wait for the adjuster to determine that

I'm not looking for exact, just trying to figure out if this is the type of unibody where frame damage can be fixed if it exists.

It can be fixed but very expensive. Engine and transmission need removed

I’m going to go ahead and disagree with that. If the rails are bent they’ll be pulled back on a frame machine. If they’re so bad they need to be replaced, it’ll total. I can’t see a scenario where you’d have to remove the block and trans where they wouldn’t just write it off.

Newer cars. I’ve worked for 2 Subaru dealers. First one we removed countless engines and transmissions for it

On a 7 year old car though? It’s not so out there on a car that’s a year or two old, but OP is talking about a 14.

Most likely not but I’ve seen some really stupid shot from insurance companies in waiting for approval on alignment 3 for car that they wouldn’t approve parts fully first time through and only approve one part at a time. Damn near refusing to pay all together. Car has 315 miles on it and was backed into in a parking lot. Gouged the fuck out of the wheel bent a control arm and lateral link

converter-bot

315 miles is 506.94 km

Find more bent shit doing alignments

If it wasn’t approved the shop shouldn’t have been working on it.

It’s probably a total if the engine and transmission got hit.

I’d say this is probably a total loss if any frame rails need to be replaced. The more and more I look at it, I think they engine has been impacted. For sure it needs a new rad support, rails are probably kicked outward.

This moved quite a ways while in park. I would be concerned about transmission and drive line components as well. None of us have x Ray vision and can validate there is frame damage from these photos. This needs to go to a shop and fill tear down done with measurements to know if the structure is damaged and how bad

I know for specifics I need to wait until they can get to it and go over it with an expert's eyes. Since it all happened after shops closed for the night, the idea of posting here was just to get a ballpark sense of how fucked my car is.

I'll admit that mechanical damage is also a fear I want checked, but one I hope was minimized: I had the parking brake on because the car normally rocks an uncomfortable (to me, no mechanic has ever breathed a word of concern) amount on the parking pin if I don't, so hopefully that gave everything the best possible survival chance.

Edit: this is my first time getting collision repair. How do I mention that my car was pushed aways and needs a thorough mechanical inspection as well? Do I get any input before they tell me what they think?

Yea there is structural damage but with out tear down and measurements we don’t know if the frame rails and inner apron are destroyed, we can only speculate there are based off the photos. If they are crunched the car is a total.

Tell them it moved approx 9 feet while in park with the parking brake set and show them the photos. If the shop says it’s fine and they don’t need to inspect it because it drives fine take it to a different shop and/or reiterate your concerns to the insurance adjuster/claim handler. That should not be over looked as it may seem fine now but 10k down the road a small part that has been stressed could cause transmission failure.

Some good damage for sure. If the frame rails aren’t toast, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if was repairable though. Subaru parts are pretty cheap. Had a 16 crosstrek a couple years ago that belonged to my techs daughter, and this thing absolutely should not have been fixed, but the insurance appraiser said the dollar amount was just too low to justify totaling. Luckily I knew the guy pretty well and he turned his head while I put an extra buckle in the roof to get the numbers up. He didn’t want to have it fixed, I didn’t want to fix it, and my techs daughter didn’t want it back. Though I will say, I also own a Crosstrek and I was very impressed with how the car took the hit. Seemed very safe on the inside.
