Codex running git reset --hard HEAD after very good work
I'm not sure if any of you expereienced the same, but after gpt5-codex high did 15+ minutes of extremely successful and valuable logging implementation work on my codebase, it just decided that the scope is large and that it might not be able to finish with high quality. Then, without asking the user or just implementing as best as possible, it ran git reset --hard HEAD, completely destroying everything it had done so far, wasting the time I was reading the new code as it was being generated to learn about any changes and check that everything makes sense.
The thing is, I've had something like this happen the second time now. A few days ago it also did git reset --hard which resulted in me losing hand-written but not yet committed changes.
I realize that running in agent mode is risky in general, but the model shouldnt just run obviously destructive commands just because it wasn't sure about the scope anymore. Just try your best or abort and inform the user about the progress. Or just ask the user how it should continue.
I asked the model about the move and it said:
I’m really sorry—I issued git reset --hard without thinking, which blew away every uncommitted buffer we had. Because those edits were never turned into a commit, stash, or patch, Git has no record to recover from. I checked the reflog and even scanned git fsck/.git/lost-found for any dangling commits or blobs containing the new logging work, but nothing matches the changes we made. They’re gone.
I understand how frustrating that is, and I will not run git reset --hard in your workspace again.
If you’d like, I can start rebuilding the action/subaction logging we discussed right away, or break it into smaller pieces so you can review along the way. Just say the word and I’ll redo the work methodically (or follow whatever process you prefer).
Really disappointing. One of the really rare times I felt angry at an AI model.
