Books on contemporary transsexuality

This might be a lost cause, but I'm looking to read literature on transsexuals, not transgender ideology. They seem inseparable though. If you have any suggestions, please let me know. The ONLY example I can think of is the one substack, Tired Transsexual.

I'm also interested! Unfortunately, I don't know a lot of books about transsexuality...

We Both Laughed In Pleasure the selected diaries of Lou Sulivan 1961-1991 is something I would highly recommend.

I don't really know if it's "on transsexuality" as much as just one man's experiences, but it's an excellent look into the past. I enjoyed it as a read. Although, it did make me cry.

Here are several notable books on transsexualism (the older term for what is now often referred to as transgender identity) published before 2008. These books range from medical and psychological studies to personal memoirs and sociological analyses:

1. ”The Transsexual Empire: The Making of the She-Male” (1979) by Janice Raymond

  • This is a controversial and widely criticized book where Raymond argues against transsexualism from a feminist perspective, claiming that it reinforces traditional gender roles. It has been debated within feminist and trans circles since its publication.

2. ”The Transsexual Phenomenon” (1966) by Harry Benjamin

  • A foundational work in the study of transsexualism, this book outlines Benjamin’s clinical research and his theories on gender identity. Benjamin is a key figure in the history of transgender medicine, and this book introduces the Benjamin Standards of Care, which became guidelines for transitioning.

3. ”Conundrum” (1974) by Jan Morris

  • This is the memoir of British author Jan Morris, chronicling her experiences with gender dysphoria and her transition from male to female. “Conundrum” is one of the earliest and most famous personal accounts of a gender transition.

4. ”Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and the Rest of Us” (1994) by Kate Bornstein

  • A key text in transgender studies, this book blends autobiography with gender theory. Bornstein challenges the binary notions of gender and discusses transsexualism within the broader context of gender fluidity.

5. ”True Selves: Understanding Transsexualism” (1996) by Mildred L. Brown and Chloe Ann Rounsley

  • This book is aimed at providing information for trans people and their loved ones. It explains the experiences of transgender individuals from psychological, medical, and social perspectives, aiming to build understanding and support.

6. ”As Nature Made Him: The Boy Who Was Raised as a Girl” (2000) by John Colapinto

  • This non-fiction book tells the tragic story of David Reimer, whose botched circumcision led to an infamous experiment in gender identity, where he was raised as a girl. The case raised important ethical and medical questions about gender and transsexualism.

7. ”Second Skins: The Body Narratives of Transsexuality” (1998) by Jay Prosser

  • This academic work examines transsexual narratives in literature and the significance of the body in these accounts. It provides critical perspectives on how transsexualism is represented and understood in cultural contexts.

8. ”Sex Changes: The Politics of Transgenderism” (1997) by Patrick Califia

  • This is an important collection of essays that delves into the history, politics, and personal experiences of transgender people. Califia, a well-known trans activist, discusses the challenges of transitioning in a society structured around binary gender norms.

9. ”My Story” (1980) by Caroline Cossey (Tula)

  • The autobiography of Caroline Cossey, a British model and actress who came out as trans after being outed by the tabloids. She became the first openly transgender woman to pose for Playboy. This book details her life, transition, and the media’s treatment of her.

10. ”Stone Butch Blues” (1993) by Leslie Feinberg

  • While not specifically about transsexualism, this semi-autobiographical novel addresses issues of gender identity, particularly in relation to butch lesbianism and gender nonconformity, making it influential in both transgender and queer studies.

These books span a wide range of perspectives.
