Revamping the Quarantine Function
While Reddit has had a quarantine function for almost three years now, we have learned in the process. Today, we are updating our quarantining policy to reflect those learnings, including adding an appeals process where none existed before.
On a platform as open and diverse as Reddit, there will sometimes be communities that, while not prohibited by the Content Policy, average redditors may nevertheless find highly offensive or upsetting. In other cases, communities may be dedicated to promoting hoaxes (yes we used that word) that warrant additional scrutiny, as there are some things that are either verifiable or falsifiable and not seriously up for debate (eg, the Holocaust did happen and the number of people who died is well documented). In these circumstances, Reddit administrators may apply a quarantine.
The purpose of quarantining a community is to prevent its content from being accidentally viewed by those who do not knowingly wish to do so, or viewed without appropriate context. We’ve also learned that quarantining a community may have a positive effect on the behavior of its subscribers by publicly signaling that there is a problem. This both forces subscribers to reconsider their behavior and incentivizes moderators to make changes.
Quarantined communities display a warning that requires users to explicitly opt-in to viewing the content (similar to how the NSFW community warning works). Quarantined communities generate no revenue, do not appear in non-subscription-based feeds (eg Popular), and are not included in search or recommendations. Other restrictions, such as limits on community styling, crossposting, the share function, etc. may also be applied. Quarantined subreddits and their subscribers are still fully obliged to abide by Reddit’s Content Policy and remain subject to enforcement measures in cases of violation.
Moderators will be notified via modmail if their community has been placed in quarantine. To be removed from quarantine, subreddit moderators may present an appeal here. The appeal should include a detailed accounting of changes to community moderation practices. (Appropriate changes may vary from community to community and could include techniques such as adding more moderators, creating new rules, employing more aggressive auto-moderation tools, adjusting community styling, etc.) The appeal should also offer evidence of sustained, consistent enforcement of these changes over a period of at least one month, demonstrating meaningful reform of the community.
You can find more detailed information on the quarantine appeal and review process here.
This is another step in how we’re thinking about enforcement on Reddit and how we can best incentivize positive behavior. We’ll continue to review the impact of these techniques and what’s working (or not working), so that we can assess how to continue to evolve our policies. If you have any communities you’d like to report, tell us about it here and we’ll review. Please note that because of the high volume of reports received we can’t individually reply to every message, but a human will review each one.
Edit: Signing off now, thanks for all your questions!
Double edit: typo.

Is there a way to view all quarantined subreddits? At least, is there a way to know whether a sub is quarantined or not?
interstellargator 19 points · Sep 2018
You can tell it's quarantined because it brings up a splash page when you try to visit it warning you of that. No comprehensive and up to date lists that I'm aware of.

Why the fuck are there so many n-word subreddits?

i dont know man. people are f'ed up. the abortion one and deformed kids bother me too. actually that whole list is gross.

Because an african referring to another african as a nigger is not racist.

They said that they don't want to make a list which is so idiotic.

did they just lie in another comment?
JackDilsenberg 5 points · Sep 2018
They didn't lie, the admins didn't make that list
[deleted] 2 points · Sep 2018
Oh? Who made this?
raider1v11 3 points · Sep 2018
the sub.
interstellargator 2 points · Sep 2018
I dunno. I get the reasoning. The point of quarantining is to isolate and dissuade those communities. Having a big list of them kind of runs directly contrary to that intention.
[deleted] 5 points · Sep 2018
Which is not a good thing.
Intention wasn't to avoid transparency.
interstellargator 4 points · Sep 2018
I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with that, but if that is the intention it still wouldn't make sense to publicise the list of communities.
[deleted] 2 points · Sep 2018
It's for transparency. That is something most redditors wish from something they can easily replace with 4-chan type discussion: Moderating something without transparency gives no reason to use Reddit for politics.
[deleted] 0 points · Sep 2018
Thank you big brother! I am too stupid and naive to handle that info on my own!
Smallzfry 46 points · Sep 2018
Since there's an opt-in similar to NSFW subs, I assume that if you're viewing a quarantined sub you know about it already.
CallwithQTHoney 34 points · Sep 2018
I'm curious about what kind of subs are quarantined.
r/watchpeopledie seems like quintessential quarantine material, but it isn't. So what is being quarantined?
tejmar 23 points · Sep 2018
watchpeopledie has been quarantined
Alastair789 15 points · Sep 2018
It looks from the list like its hate speech

LoveFister6969 25 points · Sep 2018
Anything slightly politically right of center
gibbodaman -1 points · Sep 2018
When did dying become right of center? You have such a persecution complex.
Alastair789 -9 points · Sep 2018
Hate speech is speech that attacks a person or group on the basis of attributes such as race, religion, ethnic origin, national origin, sex, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity, if you look at the list a large amount of it features the n word, other derogatory terms for black people and homosexual individuals which is why it looks like they’re banning hate speech
Fnhatic 13 points · Sep 2018
So why is /r/fragilewhiteredditor not quarantined?
BumwineBaudelaire 19 points · Sep 2018
note making fun of white people, or folks without university education, or american southerners etc is a-ok since they're not on Team San Francisco
[deleted] -1 points · Sep 2018
Dont forget Christians as well
Alastair789 -9 points · Sep 2018
While making fun of those people is bad, obviously, I think it’s important to bear in mind that those people having been subject to slavery and lynchings
Fnhatic 13 points · Sep 2018
Literally zero people on reddit ever experienced a day of slavery.
Alastair789 -5 points · Sep 2018
Maybe I should have been clearer, the history of white and black people in America is totally different as black people have been and still are afflicted by institutional racism, which has many forms
Fnhatic 6 points · Sep 2018
And they're gonna be getting centuries of mileage out of that one aren't they.

BumwineBaudelaire -1 points · Sep 2018
fair enough but surely there can't be more than a tiny handful of redditors who have been slaves and been lynched?
[deleted] 14 points · Sep 2018

Alastair789 -15 points · Sep 2018
It’s a complicated issue but I think to state that it’s the same as “fuck black people” for example would be to trivialize the institutional and systematic racism these people feel every day.

It’s mainly hate speech, necrophilia is an illegal act in some places that reddit doesn’t want to be seen as a part of
[deleted] 5 points · Sep 2018
speech I disagree with*
Alastair789 0 points · Sep 2018
There are many subreddits in that list with the n word in their title, it’s pretty clearly hate speech.
[deleted] 5 points · Sep 2018
And? Many others dont. And plenty of subs ripping on whites or men stay. It's not about hate speech it's about censorship
Alastair789 -1 points · Sep 2018
I can’t name one
xboxhelpdude2 -1 points · Sep 2018
Are rap songs hate speech? My god Ive found my favorite liberal idiot so far. Youre just so perfectly cliche
Alastair789 -1 points · Sep 2018
They could be if they contain hate speech
xboxhelpdude2 -1 points · Sep 2018
What about the ones that say nigger? Who defines hate speech?
Alastair789 -1 points · Sep 2018
I don’t think even you believe the argument “if a rap song uses the n word, it’s hate speech,” I think we’re both aware that words derive meaning from the context they’re placed in, and as to “who defines hate speech,” the answer is we all do, and that’s why rap artists aren’t constantly in courtrooms getting prosecuted for hate speech, we all understand it to be in a different context.

Heh, I was only ironically spreading Nazi propaganda.
xboxhelpdude2 2 points · Sep 2018

[deleted] 1 points · Sep 2018
If you're spreading nazi propaganda because you find it funny when people get mad about you spreading nazi propaganda, you're just a twat. Doing it because it rightfully pisses people off doesn't mean you're not a piece of shit or that it's not wrong to ban your ass.
Alastair789 1 points · Sep 2018
Not really, look at the list.
https://www.reddit.com/r/reclassified/wiki/quarantined
xboxhelpdude2 8 points · Sep 2018
Yes really, Ive seen the list which is why I said that. One of the very top onez listed is /r/SpaceDicks. If thats a hate subreddit then this world needs us to go to extinct
Alastair789 0 points · Sep 2018
Okay, name three
xboxhelpdude2 6 points · Sep 2018
Spacedicks is one ben garrison is 2 and a couple others are as well but I cant visit em to confirm 100% for you. And even then, what does it matter? If theres only 1 or 2 then my statement is correct that jokes are being quarantined as well. I didnt say it was all jokes. I didnt say it was mostly jokes. I said "and jokes" Not sure why that upsets you to be said. Could you explain that? When you say "not really" thats a very feminine way to say "yes but I cant accept that so Im going to argue"
Alastair789 -2 points · Sep 2018
So you can’t name three, overwhelmingly what they’re banning is hate speech, spacedicks Was a shock nsfw sub that reddit doesn’t want to be affiliated with and wouldn’t be surprised if it contained illegal acts such as necrophilia.
Ben Garrison is a racist who draws racist cartoons like this one.

Garrison drew neither of those cartoons, you rube. A fair number of people enjoy both photoshopping his comics and simply slapping his signature on questionable art.
Your first example is nothing more than a /pol/ goof. Here's a thread of people discussing how they edit his drawings (you can find your example near the bottom):
https://archive.4plebs.org/pol/thread/41024524/
And here's the original of your second "example":

You're Incredibly gullible.

Why cant you address the rest of my last comment? I can name 5 but as I said I cant visit to confirm. Im being honest unlike you. You admit SpaceDicks is a joke sub but then wave it off as it MIGHT contain certain content. What a spineless hack. Ben garrison makes joke cartoons that you find offensive. Theyre still jokes. Stop being so dishonest. Now respond to my last comment

Are you sure you want to view this community?
This community is quarantined.
It is dedicated to shocking or highly offensive content.
Are you certain you want to continue?
Fnhatic 4 points · Sep 2018
Things that hurt liberal feelings.
/r/fragilejewishredditor is quarantined, but /r/fragilewhiteredditor isn't. The content is the exact same.

And now we are... Almost exactly lining up timewise with your comment lmao
Fancydepth -8 points · Sep 2018
This is more political than actual offensiveness. Seeing dead bodies is apparently A-OK, but anything that doesn't pander to the hard left admins might get the quarantine hammer.
