Revamping the Quarantine Function
While Reddit has had a quarantine function for almost three years now, we have learned in the process. Today, we are updating our quarantining policy to reflect those learnings, including adding an appeals process where none existed before.
On a platform as open and diverse as Reddit, there will sometimes be communities that, while not prohibited by the Content Policy, average redditors may nevertheless find highly offensive or upsetting. In other cases, communities may be dedicated to promoting hoaxes (yes we used that word) that warrant additional scrutiny, as there are some things that are either verifiable or falsifiable and not seriously up for debate (eg, the Holocaust did happen and the number of people who died is well documented). In these circumstances, Reddit administrators may apply a quarantine.
The purpose of quarantining a community is to prevent its content from being accidentally viewed by those who do not knowingly wish to do so, or viewed without appropriate context. We’ve also learned that quarantining a community may have a positive effect on the behavior of its subscribers by publicly signaling that there is a problem. This both forces subscribers to reconsider their behavior and incentivizes moderators to make changes.
Quarantined communities display a warning that requires users to explicitly opt-in to viewing the content (similar to how the NSFW community warning works). Quarantined communities generate no revenue, do not appear in non-subscription-based feeds (eg Popular), and are not included in search or recommendations. Other restrictions, such as limits on community styling, crossposting, the share function, etc. may also be applied. Quarantined subreddits and their subscribers are still fully obliged to abide by Reddit’s Content Policy and remain subject to enforcement measures in cases of violation.
Moderators will be notified via modmail if their community has been placed in quarantine. To be removed from quarantine, subreddit moderators may present an appeal here. The appeal should include a detailed accounting of changes to community moderation practices. (Appropriate changes may vary from community to community and could include techniques such as adding more moderators, creating new rules, employing more aggressive auto-moderation tools, adjusting community styling, etc.) The appeal should also offer evidence of sustained, consistent enforcement of these changes over a period of at least one month, demonstrating meaningful reform of the community.
You can find more detailed information on the quarantine appeal and review process here.
This is another step in how we’re thinking about enforcement on Reddit and how we can best incentivize positive behavior. We’ll continue to review the impact of these techniques and what’s working (or not working), so that we can assess how to continue to evolve our policies. If you have any communities you’d like to report, tell us about it here and we’ll review. Please note that because of the high volume of reports received we can’t individually reply to every message, but a human will review each one.
Edit: Signing off now, thanks for all your questions!

Given the point of quarantine is to reduce exposure to offensive content, we thought that would defeat the purpose (and let’s be real, redditors who want to will make a list anyway). Nevertheless, due to the warning system, if you encounter a quarantined subreddit, you will know it.

How many times do TD users need to be shown to be doxxing people, along with other breaches of site wide policies, before you will actually apply the punishment any other Subreddit would get?
Jess_than_three 36 points · Sep 2018
It's never, ever, ever going to happen.
Stalking_Goat 9 points · Sep 2018
Nah, it'll happen about a week after the next president gets inaugurated.
Jess_than_three 9 points · Sep 2018
Always assuming there is a next President.. Bleh.
critically_damped 2 points · Sep 2018
And excessive optimism is what got us into this mess in the first place.
MemoryLapse 9 points · Sep 2018
Pretty sure that was arrogance, not optimism.
thunderclapMike 0 points · Sep 2018
There wont be. trump will declare martial law in 2023 and suspend elections. he's not called God emperor by them for nothing.
Jess_than_three 0 points · Sep 2018
I wouldn't be surprised if that suspending elections piece happened in 2018.
thunderclapMike 0 points · Sep 2018
I wouldnt complain if the rounding up of the incendary problems began. Got to make use of those secret fema camps and secret black coffins.
(I am mocking some people. I dont seriously believe this will happen)
thunderclapMike 1 points · Sep 2018
So, 2024 then.
Northsidebill1 9 points · Sep 2018
As many times as it takes for enough time to pass that that subreddit isnt making them piles of cash, I would suspect. Once Il Douche isnt President anymore and the ad money slows way down, if the Trumptards over at T_D keep showing their asses they will be dealt with. But not before that happens
thunderclapMike 1 points · Sep 2018
So again in 2024?
Northsidebill1 1 points · Sep 2018
It wouldnt surprise me at all if that Tangerine Twat got re-elected

They should get their punishment the same time SRS does.
not_a_qult_ifitsreal 5 points · Sep 2018
Deal. Tomorrow?
musicotic 7 points · Sep 2018
Wow people are still pulling out the SRS bogeyman years later
EternallyMiffed 4 points · Sep 2018
What bogeyman? There are actual reddit admins and powermods who were mods there.

Source?

Please point out where this happens. Ive seen it on Poltics and others. Just one person give me a link.

Ban the users, not the sub.
not_a_qult_ifitsreal 10 points · Sep 2018
Initially yes, but when it's endemic in a sub and becomes part of its culture, you shut down the sub.
critically_damped 4 points · Sep 2018
Both could be done at the push of a single button. The admins simply choose not to do that.
notsurewhatiam -1 points · Sep 2018
Nope too logical

Provide evidence of t_d doxxing before you make those batshit claims.

Not all doxxing but here's a start after 3 seconds of searching. https://www.reddit.com/r/AgainstHateSubreddits/comments/851rgd/i_compiled_a_list_showcasing_the_donalds_50_worst/

I wonder if he’ll reply
critically_damped 1 points · Sep 2018
This is not the question. The real question is "will anyone who subscribes to TD bullshit be swayed by encountering the facts", and the answer to that question is decisively "no".
TrumpCardStrategy 1 points · Oct 2018
How is a long list of dubious accusations and links in anyway “facts” You just saw the list and assumed factualness without investigating. Gish Gallop tactic to cover that at it’s core the asserted premise is BS
LONGLIVEDONALDTRUMP -8 points · Sep 2018
"subscribes to TD bullshit" = translation: "supports our president"
I literally only come on reddit to post in T_D and read triggered comments like yours. Every day, almost two years later now, I hope to god I can sign in to find there's still more triggered comments from losers like you. And every day I haven't been let down yet.
42_youre_welcome 1 points · Sep 2018
Pathetic
TrumpCardStrategy 1 points · Oct 2018
I wonder if you even bothered to read the list critically. You are gobbling up a BS Gish Gallop. “Golly sure is a lot of links, it MUST be truthful & accurate!”
r1zz 3 points · Sep 2018
So, first example shows ONE random person out of thousands of active discord users posted a link to a file with people's info, that came from 4chan, in a discord server. That server was supposedly created by "members" of The_Donald.
2nd example the comment has been deleted.
3rd example gave the work EMAIL of a reporter, to let him know how they feel about his slander of Seth Rich.
4th example shows a locked post with 159 votes and 3 comments and the post was a link to an article about an anti muslim nut who stabbed 2 people that were trying to help the muslims.
5th example I think just says "fuck /r/politics"?
6th example is supposedly showing vote brigading, but I don't see how. Maybe I'm missing something?
7th example has been deleted but something about the family of Seth Rich not wanting to be used for conspiracies
I assume I could go on and on. Most of these posts are a year old, deleted or have a few upvotes. But THIS is what you think should get a sub banned? Do you people not realize what a dangerous road it is to ban speech just because you disagree with it?
TrumpCardStrategy 1 points · Oct 2018
They always prepare these huge lists that link to BS. Barely upvoted, deleted posts, banned users, irrelevant to the topic. Classic Gish Gallop style tactic that upon investigation reveals the whole thing is a house of cards.
TrumpCardStrategy 1 points · Oct 2018
So you fell for some weak Gish Gallop list? Just proves you’re intellectually shallow.
notsurewhatiam -2 points · Sep 2018
I browse that sub everyday, it amazes me how you people catch (deleted) posts like that when I can't ever find one myself.

The problem is, is that it isn't reported at all by the demographic that normally browses T_D. And any sane person doesn't really want to go to that subreddit to begin with. So you don't see it being removed for months at a time until it is discovered later.
And even then, it stays up far too long even after someone eventually discovers it and reports it.
thunderclapMike 3 points · Sep 2018
The same could be said for Politics.
LONGLIVEDONALDTRUMP -6 points · Sep 2018
I'm in the sub quite OFTEN over the last two years and while I adMIT I do not sort by NEWEST and mostly only sort by default (top) every time I see a racist/trolling comment (which is fairly RARE to begin with) it gets reported by me or another and is removed QUICKLY.
For such a RACIST sub they sure are QUICK to remove/delete reported racist comments! (which again, happens fairly RARELY in MY experience)
nmotsch789 -20 points · Sep 2018
Most of which were either deleted by mods, or were posted and upvoted by anti-Trump trolls to try and make T_D look bad, or were taken so far out of context that they aren't even in the same solar system anymore. Or they take a single comment that got downvoted heavily and claim it's indicative of the whole sub. Or they post things that aren't really egregious at all, to add to the gish-gallop. Or they post about other biased organizations talking about how horrible T_D is, as if that's somehow proof.
not_a_qult_ifitsreal 22 points · Sep 2018
The fact they eventually remove it once people draw attention doesn't make things better.
nmotsch789 3 points · Sep 2018
Are they supposed to somehow remove it before anyone saw it and reported it? Are they supposed to manually check every single post and comment that ever gets posted at any hour of any day?
critically_damped 1 points · Sep 2018
And it demonstrates that they know exactly what kind of shit should not be permitted, and that they continue to do it anyway.
Fancydepth -43 points · Sep 2018
Come on, this is like linking Infowars to "prove" that Obama is a lizard person.
not_a_qult_ifitsreal 33 points · Sep 2018
It's literally a list of links dude.
[deleted] 2 points · Sep 2018
Ok, here's a list of links.
https://www.reddit.com/r/announcements/comments/827zqc/in_response_to_recent_reports_about_the_integrity/dv8uc3a/
Rindan 28 points · Sep 2018
If infowars has a bunch of links to White House documents where they declare themselves lizard people, I would be less inclined to dismiss it.
The link is just a list of links to T._D. You can go look for yourself an see if they are making lizard people claims, or if they just don't like T_D because it is a garbage sub and they are documenting what garbage it is.
[deleted] 4 points · Sep 2018
Ok, here's a bunch of links too

[deleted] -1 points · Sep 2018
I don't like t_d, I don't even post there if you check my history, the point is that rules should be applied equally, yet no one seems to point out the leftist subreddits.
Glassesman7 1 points · Sep 2018
I completely agree with you. I thought you were just using your links to justify the doxxing in T_d as well.

Uh, yeah. Those places suck too. Finding more dog shit doesn't make the shit you already have stink less. I think you are all a bunch of dumbasses having a stupid LARPing fight.
[deleted] 1 points · Sep 2018
I agree, I just don't see any of those subs pointed out when these kinds of things are posted. Let's ban r/The_Donald and r/Cringeanarchy in exchange for r/LateStageCapitalism, r/ChapoTrapHouse and r/ShitRedditSays, what do you say?
albmrbo 1 points · Sep 2018
I really hope every single user linked there sees consequences. But the link doesn't show problems found as generally in those subreddits as it found in T_D
[deleted] -8 points · Sep 2018
r/AgainstHateSubreddits? Oh, is it that subreddit which bans every mention of a leftist subreddit?
Leftist do way more calls to violence than right-wingers

Mere insults and trolling are against reddit rules.
And comprise 99% of their content.
not_a_qult_ifitsreal 2 points · Sep 2018
Their front page currently is incredible. Pages of insults against Dr Ford.
notsurewhatiam 3 points · Sep 2018
As opposed to half the Reddit front page being insults against Trump and company?
[deleted] 5 points · Sep 2018
Sharing a link which accurately reports that he was laughed at by the world isn't an insult.
By allowing td to exist, reddit is abdicating it's no insults policy in general.
iPoopedInUrMumsMouth 1 points · Sep 2018
The lying bitch deserves more than insults. She should be shunned and exiled.

I see you're replying to a out 100 people. That list really irritated you huh?
TrumpCardStrategy 1 points · Oct 2018
Still avoiding the substance of the refutation, you must really be staking a lot on that list of yours.

"the list is meaningless because mods eventually got around to deleting things" isn't a refutation.
