Is there a reader mode for Brave mobile?

I've moved to Brave on desktop a couple months back, but still use Firefox on my phone (Android). I installed Brave on my phone today and... I'm disappointed, I could live without uBlock Origin and rely on Shields, but I really miss the Reader feature from Firefox. I saw there is/was Speed Reader and a dedicated Reader mode, but I can't seem to find either, and given that there is no extension support I'm out of options.

Did I miss it or there's no such option on mobile?

Thanks!

they should add a switch for that somewhere in the GUI

Welp, I found it: https://brave.com/tips-and-tricks-for-brave-on-your-phone/

tl;dr:

  • Open new tab and go to chrome://flags
  • Search for "Reader Mode triggering"
  • Set it to "Always" or "All articles"
  • Restart the browser
  • Opening an article now will prompt to "Show a simplified view", which you can dismiss or refresh the page to get it back

That's it.

I tried this but there is no prompt.

Instead of chrome prefix I used Brave's (not sure if any real difference): brave://flags

But just to mention, I could find this flag and enable it as you mentioned, but this haven't changed anything on the target websites I wanted.

Anyways, I really appreciate your topic and your finding

This Brave flag did nothing

It doesn't show a prompt for me, it either always triggers with all pages or nothing happens

Thanks for all your comments! The lack of Reader Mode support in Brave has been annoying me for months now. In the brave://flags I set Speed Reader to Enabled and Reader Mode triggering to Always, relaunched, still I see no prompts. I have Sync enabled and it's syncing settings, I hope that doesn't break it somehow. u/Luliyoko you say it does work for you?

Luliyoko

It does work, but it works on all pages automatically. It doesn't show a prompt asking me if i I want the reader mode version, it just triggers automatically : /

I hated it tbh, it's very annoying

After Enabling #reader-mode-auto-distill I can see what you mean. It's annoying as hell as it opens an additional window for every site you visit. It's reader mode but it doesn't even respect system light/dark!? That is the whole point of the feature in the first place...

Luliyoko

Yup! I gave up on it. I'll keep using brave for everything else but the sites that have long text I need to read. I'll just use FireFox for those since it has reader view

Edit: I don't like or trust chrome

There are a couple of threads in the Brave forums about this. If some of the people affected here would post about what they wished from Brave they might respond to it sooner.

Maybe is still experimental feature from chromium?

Your tip came up in my search results. Brill, thanks. V. useful to a Brave app newbie.

Well it's 2022 and gues what. The answer is still - no. There's no built-in reader mode like in FF. Speed Reader is a joke and works only on a limited number of sites.

There is, at least was, and it kinda sucked. Read my comment.

In 2025, there are a bunch of flags when you search for 'reader' in brave://flags. Enabling any of the 'reader mode' related flags enables a reader mode item in the brave menu. Though it only works on article-like sites. There's also a speedreader, which gets its own menu item and appears to be a separate type of reader mode, one more suited for larger screens.
