The TS030 starting up still gives me goosebumps 8 years later.

Is there a video for this? I wanna see it in action

The Cayenne has never had a DCT.

My dad's Highlander Hybrid does this too. He'll turn it on and start driving immediately and you'll hear the engine kick on down the street. Sounds pretty cool too.

magus-21

Naturally aspirated 4.0L 3.4L V8.

Competing against an Audi 4.0L 3.7L turbodiesel V6, a Porsche 2.0L turbocharged V4, and a Nissan 3.0L twin-turbocharged V6. Whoops, this is the TS030, not the TS040. Porsche and Nissan didn’t compete until 2015.

What a time for motorsport those years of WEC were.

thank god we got rid of diesels. Didn't add anything to the racing, was a marketing job because diesel was "fuel of the future" back then. Cars didn't have any sound.

Dadiot_1987

DISAGREE. --shakes can of marbles--

Oliveiraz33

Feel free to discuss why you think diesels add something to the sport

Dadiot_1987

It... was a joke. I mean, honestly I'm not sure how you didn't get that, or read my flare? Good luck mate.

Oliveiraz33

Ups sorry :(

I live in Europe, so you can bet I did. In fact I had a Toyota Starlet 1.5 diesel NA.

What does direct injection have to do with the sound?

Gasoline engines also have turbos and they have sound. Obviously turbos muffle sound, but they don't make engines silent. Turbo or not, gasoline engines make more noise than diesels.

Diesels just sound a lot more muffled, it's the nature of the engine, and doing 5000rpm doesn't help.

Diesel only makes more "tac-tac-tac" noise due to he type of ignition. But induction and exhaust noise, gasoline makes a lot more of it.

The good thing is that I don't need google. I've had the experience more than once of hearing a gasoline engine and a diesel straight piped. Gasoline engine is A LOT louder than diesel straight piped.

You don't need exhaust vibration for anything, in fact if you take you're car's exhaust off, you have to drive with ear plugs lol.

If it wasn't for BOP, diesels might have had a big advantage for an endurance race, because the Audis and Peugeots definitely had the pace to match gasoline cars, but had greater efficiency. But IIRC, the BOP rules led to them having smaller fuel tanks, so their pit stop advantage was pretty much nullified.

Personally, the engineering competition in WEC was a huge attraction for me, much moreso than the actual wheel to wheel racing because the gaps spread out so much during the actual races, especially Le Mans. The variety in engines in 2015 especially was hugely fascinating to watch.

Oliveiraz33

BoP? are kidding me?

Diesels were racing with 5.5 liter twin turbo V12's. If you wanted to race gasoline regulations would only allow you 2.0 turbo's or 3.4 NA's.

If there was pairity with rules and you allowed 5.5 liter twin turbo gasolines engines with the boost that diesels were doing, you would end up with 1500+ HP gasiline prototypes, vs the 650hp diesel. Not to mention that diesel engines are heavier.

Even with same fuel tanks, there would be absolute no way diesels would get near the gasoline cars. Gasoline cars would give such spanking each lap on diesels that the fuel efficiency of diesels would be completely negated.

Diesels were only in Lemans because of marketing, because at the time diesel was "the fuel of future" just like hybrids are today, so they make regulations to let diesels and hybrid engine win. Just marketing to attract manufacturers, nothing else.

Diesel has no place in racing, it's simply heavier and less powerfull than gasoline engine.

magus-21

Nissan fielded a 3.0L twin turbocharged V6 while Audi raced a 3.7L twin-turbo V6. Granted, the car sucked, but clearly the regulations weren't as restrictive on displacement/turbocharging on gasoline engines as you claim, nor were the differences as stark.

Oliveiraz33

If you don't watch racing, please don't talk about something you don't know. The 3.7 liters diesels were later with hybridization, where the 5.5 V12 were stupid dominant, was an absolute joke. Then they replaced to 3.7 liters to try to make a competitive field. The other LMP1 teams that aren't manufacturers started to become pissed with ACO, because their cars weren't competitive because they weren't diesel. But since they are simple racing teams and manufacturers, there's 0 incentive for them to build diesel engines for racing, because they aren't in racing to sell diesel shopping cars like Audi or Peugeot are.

Simples as that.

Also worth mentioning that those 3.7 liter v6 diesels made less than 500hp, they were fast because they were assisted with a 350kw (470hp) electric motor. We have road cars making well over 700hp with that displacement engine, that tells you how "great" diesel is, when a road car can make 500.

but clearly the regulations weren't as restrictive on displacement/turbocharging on gasoline engines as you claim

5.5 liter turbo engines vs 2.0 turbo or 3.4 NA were not restrictive at all. lol. the 3.7 diesel only appeared when half the power of the car was made by electric part of the powertrain.

nor were the differences as stark.

Gasoline cars finishing 10-20 laps behind the diesels is pretty close isn't it? lol

magus-21

If you don't watch racing, please don't talk about something you don't know.

Dude, shut the fuck up. You're being an asshole about this.

The 3.7 liters diesels were later with hybridization

So? All of the hybrid engines had small displacements.

where the 5.5 V12 were stupid dominant, was an absolute joke. Then they replaced to 3.7 liters to try to make a competitive field.

So what you're saying is....they used BOP. And when the displacements/forced induction/hybridization were roughly equalized and non-diesel manufacturers became involved, the cars were competitive with one another. Which is what I said. And the diesels STILL had smaller fuel tanks.

Wait, so are you saying that privateer/customer teams can't compete with manufacturer works teams?

HOLY SHIT, U A RAEL GENIUS.

Come off it, dude. That has nothing to do with diesels vs gasoline and everything to do with manufacturer vs privateer.

Also worth mentioning that those 3.7 liter v6 diesels made less than 500hp, they were fast because they were assisted with a 350kw (470hp) electric motor. We have road cars making well over 700hp with that displacement engine, that tells you how "great" diesel is, when a road car can make 500.

All of the engines in the modern hybrid era made less than 500hp, including Nissan's twin turbo 3.0L V6.

5.5 liter turbo engines vs 2.0 turbo or 3.4 NA were not restrictive at all. lol. the 3.7 diesel only appeared when half the power of the car was made by electric part of the powertrain.

2.0L turbos and 3.4L NAs didn't race against the 5.5L diesels in the LMP1 class. Where the hell are you getting your information?

Gasoline cars finishing 10-20 laps behind the diesels is pretty close isn't it? lol

The last time that manufacturer diesels raced against manufacturer gas cars, the diesels finished 12 laps behind the gas cars.

Oliveiraz33

When your argument involves a FWD nissan, I think we are done....

magus-21

Actually, we were done when you made a bunch of false statements and then ran away when I called them out.

ycnz

The Audi LMP1-Hs sounded utterly alien and futuristic going past. It felt like something totally different, not just a boring turbo.

Oliveiraz33

Audi LMP1-

But that was more due to the hybrid system than the diesel engine itself. Replace the V6 diesel with a V6 petrol and it would sound even better.

ycnz

Eh, a combination. The diesels were quiet anyway.

Hybrids now: Ok, no more quiet electric whir, *insert car here engine turning on* literally every hybrid from Porsche, Toyota, etc. (Well I mean it IS only using that as a boost.) does this and I'm not surprised but it's cool to be honest.
