Is this a legitimate email or not?

My husband recently got caught up with some investment company who would only allow us to withdraw our funds through crypto.com. He received an email from this address: From: Crypto.com Onchain <[[email protected]](mailto:[email protected])> stating that he had only 24 hours to pay a 17% mandatory "conversion fee" to be able to withdraw tens of thousands of OUR own dollars. That time has now expired because we were unable to send them an additional $8000. All of our capital was stuck in their own system, and 24 hours is an unreasonable amount of time to come up with that funding. He did all of this without my knowledge, and it's about to force a 25 year marriage to collapse. Any insight into this is very welcome please.

ETA: He is 71 and had a stroke last year, so he’s an easy target. The scammer won’t quit harassing him but I do call the FBI and the local police. They told us to keep the channels of communication open for now while they investigate. Everything is in lockdown now and I’ve rescinded all access to our accounts from my husband entirely. Please be kind here people. I am good with investment ls myself and have never done any cryptocurrency trading myself because I’m smart enough to know I’d be out of my depth. The scammer unfortunately recognized an easy mark in a vulnerable old man who had unfortunate access to our joint investment account. He does not have any access to the main investment accounts I hold, thank goodness, but enough damage has already been done. I’m only thankful that he finally was forced to ask me for money to “withdraw” his money in the first place, or we would have lost A LOT more than $35k, I’m sure. Now I know I can’t trust him with any financial matters whatsoever, so I’m taking this as a lesson he apparently needed to learn and just trying to prevent another stroke. Your snarky comments don’t help in any way. Thank you to those of you who have been kind and confirmed what I pretty much already knew. I started the investigation with the police/FBI on Friday, but my husband didn’t want to believe it. Your comments have finally helped confirm for him that he is, indeed, an idiot.

If says only have 24 hours normally scam as they try to create urgency. You should also set up anti-phising code with crypto.com so know if a legitimate email then. Look at email address it has an extra.o on crypto definitely a scam

That’s exactly what I keep telling him. He is 71 and had a stroke, so he’s an easy target. The scammer won’t quit harassing him but I do call the FBI and the local police. They told us to keep the channels of communication open for now while they investigate. Everything is in lockdown now and I’ve rescinded all access to our accounts from my husband entirely.

He has been lured to / is depositing money straight to a scammer and has been all along they likely have a fake trading website showing an imaginary balance and profits, the money is long gone and you should not hope to recover it, any and all "crypto recovery" people are also scams..

They show you big imaginary profits to make you think its a good idea to deposit more, making you afraid of losing the imaginary money that doesnt exist....

Hard lesson learned... he probably met someone on social media or clicked a bad link on facebook / youtube and created a fake login for a fake exchange...

Stick to verifiable, researchable crypto firms in future but my recommendation is to cease all investing and do a whole lot of research before considering investing in anything again.

Dont let your marriage fall apart over this, you are both victims in this and despite how obvious the scams often are, they are cunning and catch people when their guard is down.

“Conversion fee” = scam. Every time.

Sorry about your financial loss. The onchain wallet is a non custodial wallet - like ledger. The official support can only help you with advice, but no one except you must have access to it - thats the point of non custodial (cold) wallets and the reason many scammers lure people into using such wallets unfortunately. But at least for crypto.com, you can always double-check in their official site:

https://crypto.com/eea/verify

Binance also have similar page https://www.binance.com/en/official-verification

Stop whatever you are doing. It's prob a scam.

Also, what is this "investment" company your husband invested in? What is their app or website.

That was my first thought. Not crypto, but crypTOO?? I wish I could laugh, but I can’t at this point. I’m just pissed that he didn’t see this from a mile off.
