Tinfoil Twofer: Identity of the Mystery Driver in Proven Guilty, and What Powers the Arcane Tardis

It's pretty widely discussed on the sub, and I believe there's a WoJ, that there's going to be a time travel book. Or that at least Harry will time travel.

Now time travel is hard. Vadderung tells Harry that there's a conservation principle Harry describes as conservation of history. This means that in theory, there are few limits on how much you can alter as long as you've got the juice to power it.

Now there's been discussion about what Harry will do with Demonreach. Some people talk about releasing them, some about using them to fuel a Darkhallow ritual.

I propose that Harry will use them to power his time magic. This will allow him to actually affect significant events. Given how impactful some of his speculated time traveling will be, I can't think of any way for him to get that level of energy other than Demonreach.

This is sort of related to my other thought. There's speculation about who hit Harry's car in Proven Guilty. Recent threads have posited Ebenezer, or any other Black Council member.

First I think we need to try and figure out WHY they ran into him. IIRC Harry specifically says that if they had wanted, they could have killed him. So what were they trying to do?

Well to figure that out I think we should ask ourselves what the effect of the collision was? Harry was concussed and therefore not thinking as well as usual.

Harry himself notes that all the signs about Molly were there, and that if he was thinking more clearly he'd have noticed them sooner. I think that was the motive for the wreck, to delay how long Harry took to notice.

Well why is that important. If Harry had noticed outside the jail that Molly had done mental magic he would have reported it around 4 days sooner. He would probably have given roughly the same speech to Molly and reported her to the Council. But the trial would happen earlier. Which means Michael wouldn't have saved Eb et al. And Harry wouldn't have raided Arctis Tor and received the accolades for that. And without those the Council would likely have voted to kill Molly. Which would either leave us with a dead Molly, if Harry was subdued and couldn't rescue her, or more likely leave Harry on the run with Molly fleeing the White Council. Because Harry wouldn't have stood by to let her die.

So I propose that it was actually critical that Harry be in that wreck. Very similar to how important it was that Little Chicago was mysteriously fixed.

Which leads us to the conclusion of my theory. I think that Alt-Harry is the one who ran into Harry. I don't know if that's him traveling back in time, or it's a parallel universe Harry. But I think that the car wreck was another instance of someone adjusting Harry's timeline to generate a better outcome.

Now the weakest link here is definitely that it's Alt-Harry. There are other actors who would have the required knowledge and wanted Molly's discovery delayed. It could have been Divine Intervention of some form acting to arrange it so that Michael's daughter got saved while he was busy. It could have been Mab arranging to bring Molly and Harry to Arctis Tor, or it could have been Summer manipulating Harry so they could act. Rashid seems to mess with time magic and could have acted.

But I can't come up with a different reason than delaying Harry's discovery of Molly that someone would have hit him. Anyone trying to actually hurt him would have done more than leave him dazed and delayed for a bit. So it seems definitive to me that the collision was actually to help.

To quickly sum up the argument for convenience: Because of the wreck, Harry wasn't as observant as usual. Because he wasn't observant it took him time to notice Molly's powers. Because of that delay, the timing of her trial perfectly worked out so that Molly lived and Harry stayed a member of the Council. Therefore the wreck was for Harry's benefit. There's already a precedent for mysterious interventions that help Harry, and it's speculated that it's some kind of Alt-Harry. That Alt-Harry caused the wreck.

There are a host of other “coincidences” that also occur in proven guilty: Harry getting phone calls at seemingly in opportune moments that move the plot forward.

When did this happen again?

There are at least two instances - Harry had gone through the entire purification ritual before going little Chicago the first time and right before he hits GO on Little Chicago, he gets a phone call from Molly oh help I need bail money and the second is when Harry is in the hotel room tracking “source of black magic” and Nelson calls with a “help me” and the moment Harry turns back to the detection web ritual at the exact moment it goes off, and Garry redirects the spell... back to Molly.

Perfect thanks :)

I think it was Ace who tried to run Harry off the road.

Then why didn't he kill him?

That's explained (or at least a theory is provided) by the dialogue in Proven Guilty. Harry told Murph that the perpetrator could have killed him easy, Harry had no ide he was there until after the attack. Murph then theorized it was an attack of opportunity. One that the perpetrator didn't expect and didn't plan for but took when it presented itself.

And given what we saw of Ace in Cold Days (he's an angry guy with a short fuse), it would seem to fit him nicely. He spots Dresden in traffic and instead of following him until he's alone, he overcome with rage and tries to run him off the road then and there.

I can imagine this particular set up.

Harry waiting to see if he can catch the drive with someone who's time skipping with him. Person gets twitch, wants to force Harry to go somewhere else, perhaps for the next skip so they don't miss it. They fight over the wheel, Harry hits himself ensuring they events occur.

Well presented. I can follow this and it is plausible. I wish a had a competing theory of my own for this bit, but I've always just been waiting for an answer. Good, specific theory here.

Omniscience would, in principle, mean you don't need time manipulation, since you know all things that will happen ahead of time. Obviously human free will complicates that though
