The Rapper and the Content Creator, the Gooners and the Goths
"Boil away the tiresome debates about subcultural legitimacy and the cringeworthy, Carry On Goth style titillation, this is all about tremendous amounts of online engagement and daunting amounts of money changing hands."
Sharing my article on the saga of Drake and Pinkchyu, and the wider context - the individuals and organisations making money off these interminable debates.

I have never seen bigger posers in my life than these "performative awkwardness" tiktok grifters.
Edit: I wanted to put it into words: this isn't about gatekeeping, we all know that's bullshit, this is something else. This is the commodification of a subculture and the women in it. No one involved in this is here to give to the culture, only profit from it.

I hate it too because it's definitely resulting in more non goth dudes showing up at clubs and stuff chasing them and becoming everyone's problem. I've seen this so god damn much at the Boston events and seeing it more in surrounding places too. It's just fetish fuel for gooner dudes so now we have a bunch of zoomers in basketball jerseys showing up to look for goth women.
Have been approached and harassed by these dudes multiple times now in recent months.

It’s so fucking bad around me too. I went to go out last week and when I drove by the bar there was a fucking herd of them blocking the entrance and sidewalk.
Jeans, flip flops, pastel shirts, and zero inclination towards any vaguely goth aesthetic. I know it’s about the music, I dress very subdued for work, but you can spot these people from a mile off. Not there for the show, not there to hang with friends and dance, they’re there to be creeps. There are dozens of bars in the area that cater to young fratlings and their ilk.
I didn’t even park, I went up the road to an indie show at a bar/club that’s more dive themed instead. Not paying a cover to have some kid half my age ask me to be his goth mommy.
I carry a knife and pepper spray and haven’t used either but I have FORCEFULLY stopped a couple from touching me.
I will note that the first venue I intended to visit is decent about dealing with them, but they’re there to make money at the end of the night.
