Conspiracy theorists

Does anyone feel like that we sometimes get put in the same group as conspiracy theorists and anti vaxers? We have a similar message in that we day the current government advice on nutrition is dead wrong and the lack of science leading up to it was non existent or lacking.

People just roll their eyes and assume we are another crackpot who believes the government is out to get them. Of course the government and the scientists wouldn't be giving this advice without it being backed by hard science. That's what people think and when we start saying otherwise we get put in the deniers group.

It was really hard to even convince my doctor (retired gp) mum to give it a try. She tried gastric bypass band surgery first. That failed because she kept still eating with the band and it made her sick and come up. But now after trying everything she is finally giving it a go. She is still quite sceptical (read fat phobic).

But I'm getting away from the point. How do we express that the government and science do get it wrong sometimes. But no we aren't a antivaxer or going to start talking about chemtrails etc. That we want to have science, including RCTs. And that we are open to debate

Anyone who goes against the food pyramid is classified as a crack pot. Vegan, fruitarian, keto etc. Not all humans are going to take to the same diet so there is no one size fits all. I was told years ago to go low carb by a heart doctor turned weight loss doctor. I wish I had listened back then. I think it Is hard when we have studies that contradict each other. I can give you studies that are pro keto. I can also give you studies that animal products are killing us. And when someone find something that works they become cult like in their fanaticism in it and no one else is right.

But vegans and vegetarians and kind of accepted. You have vegetarian options at restaurants or friends places. But tell them you do low carb and it blows their minds.

Even the low gluten people have products coming into the mainstream shops now. But still no lo carb stuff.

bikermonster77

Because the low carb stuff has been there all along...meats, cheeses, nuts, good oils, eggs, greens etc. Unless you’re just talking about low carb versions of usually high carb products e.g. pizza dough, desserts etc.

dalore [OP]

No it's not. Most meals have sides of carbs like rice, chips etc. Try adding for your meal with no chips or rice and they look at you funny. Only bunless burgers starting to become accepted now.

Funny, I used some of the same comparisons back in this post a few months ago.

I think the answer I came up with for myself is to keep the claims modest. I don’t claim keto is magic. I just make the claim that for me personally, it has proven to be the most effective method to lose weight over a medium-term. Hopefully that will become a long term, but I haven’t proven that yet. We’ll see.

If you look up the Sugar conspiracy, there is active evidence that Government entities have purposefully biased research related to sugar usage. Keto is part of an actual conspiracy (as much so as Tabacco did for sp many years).

FakeVivisectionist

On the upside, we all have the power to actually practice what we preach (or better yet, stay silent about), see our own quality of life increase, and affect nobody else.

Conspiracy theorists often negatively affect others - like the people who think that the Sandy Hook shootings were a government conspiracy, and have bullied the parents of children who were killed that day so that they can't visit their children's graves, and have had to move out of state.

Antivaxxers are letting their kids get sick based on the idea that if everyone else's child is vaccinated, theirs doesn't need to be, but they're evangelizing about it, so tons of other people are also not vaccinating their children, and now their babies are getting sick from measles and whooping cough.

Don't debate keto. Don't discuss keto. Shrug and say "I feel great since I started, but not everyone would be willing to try it, and I don't think it's my place to force them."

dalore [OP]

But when you have a child you can't be quiet. You don't want them learning the same nonsense in school with the eatwell plate.

JNesselroad3

True, but what you do at home with the kids will be stronger than the school indoctrination.

I had a girlfriend who works at an eating disorder clinic tell me that keto is an eating disorder. Smdh

DeliciousDan123

It's not in their interests for us to be healthy. At least not the Pharma companies.

rogertheprice

Or the sugar and grain and diabetic industries for that matter. I read on Reddit recently that in Australia, at least, the largest contributer to the diabetes association is the sugar industry. As the say, follow the money.

More research is becoming available that supports the keto diet, yet a vast amount needs to be conducted. Currently, there just isn’t a lot of research that supports keto besides the research regarding the benefits of keto to treat epilepsy. That said, prior dietary research is almost exclusively based on moderate to high carb diets, so current common knowledge is skewed. The knowledge that a diet that is high in fat can lead to disease is based on dietary habits that include both high fat and high carbs. This combination may indeed be lethal for many people. There is very little to no research that studies whether diets that are high in fat, but low in carbs, leads to certain diseases.

So no, we’re not conspiracy theorists. We are, however, treating ourselves in a very experimental way without the full knowledge of what the risks might be. There aren’t enough studies that explore the long term side effects of keto. I did a recent search on Pubmed and only found 1 long term study that explored the side effects of people who had been on keto for epilepsy. Therefore, we need to be willing to accept the fact that there is some risk involved. This might not work for everyone. It is probably not a miracle cure for everything. That said, it does seem to be improving the overall health of a lot of people. All of us who are doing keto can contribute toward improving the knowledge and health of our society by signing up as participants of research projects so that, in the future, we will have good evidence.

dalore [OP]

It's not that experimental. It's the way it's humans have been eating for 4 millennia. The current carb focused diet is the experimental diet. With the whole western world participating in the experiment. It's failing.

My country is very backward and corrupt. They openly say they need our people to be fat and sick and to die at 65 so they can't collect the "free money". One guy said the country would bankrupt if everyone was healthy! But if I said that in public they would take my by force and put me in a nuthouse and through the key in the Danube.

EatLard

The strain all those sick people put on the system would outweigh the savings by their early deaths at some point. Since you're in Europe, I would imagine healthcare is a government concern, rather than private.
In the US, the cost of diabetes alone could one day break our Medicare system (govt healthcare for old folks). It's in everyone's best interest that people are healthy for as long as possible, then drop dead.

cot5r

Lot of truth to this. Wanna go down a philosophical ‘rabbithole’? One must wonder what US gov’t officials think about all these baby boomers living into their 90s (and beyond). The projections for life expectancy have been surpassed consistently for decades. What would be the easiest way to ‘throttle’ life duration for large swathes of a population? Allow known issues with an aging water supply infrastructure to fester (wit.: Flint, MI). Both presidential candidates in the last election cycle promised to make infrastructure a central theme to their term. In that regard, their policies differed very little; yet, nothing noteworthy has been done here. I don’t actually believe the theory above, but it occurred to me one day when I was pondering both issues.

2bfree2

Well I lost lots of kilos and am way less fat an no meds. If I keep getting and staying healthy they might report me to party people then I have to answer for my crime.

cot5r

I couldn’t agree more. It’s almost a conditioned response that I expect when I bring up Keto (note: I’m lazy keto).

mgrebenc

There is no point in having that kind of conversation with anyone. I've argued about the standard diet many times and never changed any minds. Let your health and your body do all the talking for you.

FowlTemptress

Yes! But it won't last forever - social media is the great equalizer and the pharma and big food conglomerates aren't going to be able to fight it as this way of eating goes more and more mainstream. Just look at the increase in the amount of keto foods that are available now (not that I think it's great to eat keto products all the time) - the increase in just a few months is incredible. All because there's a demand for them.

dalore [OP]

Yes. I was glad with what happened with Tim Noakes in the end. Not that he had to go through it.

okiearchist

Follow the $$$$$

ANYTHING that threatens the status quo is to be vilified and ridiculed. Anyone who thinks the govt is not influenced by agribusiness and "food" maufacturers is naive.

dalore [OP]

Now that will come off as crazy and with eye rolls.

Linking to studies (with good methodology) that show the benefits of ketogenic, low carb or LCHF diets is a good start. Knowing the typical anti-keto arguments and how to counter them with research knowledge is also helpful.

One thing that also works reasonably well is just stating that fat, protein and salt just work differently on a ketogenic diet than a normal diet. That way people can maintain their biases against those things as far as a normal diet goes and you can just tout your lifestyle as having an alternate set of rules. It helps that this is also scientifically provable. I've convinced some very hard anti-fat people this way. They're not doing keto but they at least accept it as a viable alternative now.

Onetwofour8

I don't feel like some conspiracy nut/anti-vaxer.

Are there other ways to loose weight? Sure. Did they work for me? Nope. I'll stick to what I got.

I've read all of those clickbaity articles. Each one of them admits that their data may be faulty, but the title was always adamant about the issue. It feels a lot like global warming debates, where the scientists try to pinpoint the exact increase in temperatures and keep failing. They don't have all the data, some of it is impossible to control for, but they can spin it anyway they want.

wordxer

That's a very interesting observation. We likely are seen in the same light as anti-vaxxers by many.

I was actually just thinking about this today. I hate Anti Vaxers with a passion and Santa Monica actually just issued a measles health warning because someone with measles visited the area and health officials were afraid that it would spread because so many people there don't vaccinate their kids... I think the difference is, when people talk about Keto, at the end of the day it only affects them. With some other fringe groups, that's not the case. And because of that I think people care about Ketoers less.

LisaGrace

Only the people who weren't vaccinated will be affected, right? So that's a risk only the non-vaxers are taking, or the vaccine doesn't work.

SuzyQ93

Some people can't get vaccinated for various reasons. Herd immunity is important in order to protect them.

Also, vaccinated people can still contract the disease.

But the stronger the herd immunity, the more strongly everyone is protected.

LisaGrace

Of course, vaccinated people can still get it. And yes, not everyone should be vaccinated.

SuzyQ93

Sorry, your first post:

"Only the people who weren't vaccinated will be affected, right?"

seemed to indicate that you thought that vaccinated people would definitely not be affected, which isn't necessarily true.

LisaGrace

I was being sarcastic. If vaccines worked as well as they say they do, then people who were, don't have to worry. I've posted about the vaccines board s before that award people damages who are harmed by vaccines.

SuzyQ93

If vaccines worked as well as they say they do

They work exactly as well as they say they do. They don't claim 100%.

Effectiveness rates of vaccines

From the article I posted above, regarding measles:

They would also expect 3% of the vaccinated people -- or 27 people -- to get sick

Also, there's this:

Wallace notes that vaccination can have advantages, even in the rare cases in which vaccinated people get measles. These people are typically less contagious than people with measles who were never vaccinated, so they spread the virus to fewer people.

LisaGrace

No, they don't. Flu shots for instance. Read the actual CDC report. It claims that out of four out of one hundred people that catch the flu and die, two might not die. They then say the flu shot is fifty percent effective. Two percent becomes fifty.

You can't go by the article, you have to go back and read the actual CDC report or original research paper.

[deleted]

And very young children and babies who haven't been vaccinated yet.

dalore [OP]

I would argue that keto and current diet guidelines doesn't just affect them.

The current diet guidelines recommend a diet that causes obesity, diabetes and cancer. This advice will bankrupt our medical systems.

Countries with socialized medicine won't be able to afford it and countries like the USA will have lots of people bankrupt from it.

This affects everyone.

LordGopu

I'm already a libertarian so I'm used to the "holding beliefs no one else does" thing. I just don't give a crap what others think, why should I? Even if I'm wrong about something I believe at least I put some thought in research into it. That's more than like 99% of people.

Repeating something doesn't make you smart, even if you're right, it just makes you a tape recorder/parrot.

Illidari_Kuvira

Keto is one of the reasons I don't immediately dismiss so-called "conspiracy theories".

After all, we're purposely lied to for the sake of profit as far as diet goes... what else could be out there?

Obviously I try to do my own research as always, but the anti-keto movement makes you think.
