Personally I don't care about the pro/anti monarchy debate, but those who do should not be arrested for peacefully demonstrating their views. The current legislation is atrocious and the fact that labour will not commit to repeal it is even worse...

Yeah im a royalist and I agree. At the end of the day they were peaceful protestors. Tories just get a hard on off eroding our freedoms

Sure. But not blocking traffic, not intervening with troops and not scaring horses because people can be killed by out of control horses. (Although there are those who think the latter is fine.)

Peanutbuttercupssss

Maybe the police shouldn’t use horses in the first place.

I’ve nearly totally given up on the idea Brits will actually fight against our rights being eroded. We must be one of the most apathetic people on earth. The French are only 20 miles away!

It was deliberate, it was deliberate

I loved the press conference where they said they would not take their placards. Then they took their placards.

They have been played, and it was very obvious if you caught the ITV interview given by a high ranking Met copper on Thursday or Friday, I forgot which evening it was. He clearly drove the zero tolerance part home.

Republic had talks with the Met, where they were allegedly told the placards and megaphones are alright to use. Then the Met received “intelligence” that some Republic members planned to cause disruption. Which is likely bullshit.

I’d say the Met always planned to do this, they just had to wait until the regulations actually kicked in, which was last Wednesday. Then Thursday they did the switch part of the bait and switch.

The following measures in the Public Order Bill will commence on 3rd May 2023: the definition of serious disruption in the Public Order Bill, locking on, going equipped to lock on, interference with key national infrastructure, amending the seniority of police officer in London who may attach conditions to an upcoming protest or prohibit a trespassory assembly to match that applicable in forces outside of London

If you don’t want to be seen going equipped to lock on, just leave your hands at home from now on.

Republic had talks with the Met, where they were allegedly told the placards and megaphones are alright to use.

And let's face it, if you cannot hold up a sign, you cannot peacefully protest. Monarchists were allowed to shut down a city, litter everywhere, shout and cheer, whatever they wanted. Republicans were arrested for fear of causing distress by just being there.

I really hope more politicians start speaking up about this.

Rightly goddamn so, we are a constitutional monarchy, not a Republic.

YouWhatApe

The Met doesn't like rape alarms being handed out. Funny, that...

True

I am a bit surprised they were ever given the OK to use megaphones and “amplification equipment”, everyone knew it was a cavalry procession, shouting “not my king” through a megaphone at a few hundred already stressed horses sounds like a bit of a no-brainer for a veto.

roboplegicroncock

The same horses that are just fine with cannon?

SmartPipe3882

Which horses were those? Because even the King’s Troop horses pulling the cannons get moved away from them when the cannons are firing. Because cannons spook horses.

roboplegicroncock

The same ones yopu are speaking about train and display regularly with cannons going off mere metres away from them, even if they didn't over the weekend (I didn't watch).

But hey, we don't even need to get as heavy as cannons - the brass bands are far louder than a man with a megaphone shouting 'not my king'.

SmartPipe3882

If you had watched, you’d have seen quite a lot of the horses did get spooked by what was already there, so one can only assume megaphones wouldn’t have been the most constructive addition.

So when the loud noises are made by the ceremony organised by the government, it is fine, but when it is a dissonant voice making noise, it is arrest?
Nonsense.

SmartPipe3882

I didn’t say it was right or wrong. I said I was surprised they were ever told they could use Megaphones.

Strong_Wheel

Plus organisation infiltrated. Standard.

lontrinium

Make a few 'coronation babies'.

The republic demonstrators have been told no further action will be taken against them .further reinforces there was no legal basis for their arrest.
