Anyone have thoughts/experience on teaming up Dragapult with Charizard?

I’ve been picking up pieces to build Dragapult/Dusknoir as it has a lot of crossover with my Charizard deck, and I just noticed several people brought a Drag/Charizard deck to the Birmingham regional. (Example: https://limitlesstcg.com/decks/list/15283)

Anyone have experience with it? Is it just using two separate win cons while sharing an ability to find energy? Or is Dragapult more of an alternative draw engine to Pidgeot while also having more offensive use?

Budew will be live next week. I wouldn't build a deck that was from a prior meta. Either way the Drag/Zard ex deck has been around since Drag came out. It's decent, but way too slow to setup and item lock certainly isn't helping it.

Oh I could only find posts about how to play them against each other. I’m mostly picking up the Dragapult line for a future build as I have most the other stuff already. Surely Drag will survive in some form.

Drag will thrive actually but without pidgeot.

This aged well xD

The idea gets revisited every now and again, it was a bigger thing before we got sparkling crystal and crispin. The idea initially was that charizard provides energy acceleration to dragapult and is a late game cleaner. Drakalok's draw engine helps also

However, I think with budew entering the format, dragapult dusknoir will be the best way to play the deck. The synergy between dusknoir and dragapult is too good and allows many matchups to be won within 2 attacks. As deckspace for dragapult decks are really tight, and with dusknoir being as broken as it is, there really isn't room for charizard anymore, in my opinion.

That makes a lot of sense.

I played a list to 6-3 at Baltimore Regional in September. Lost a round to my being new at the game.

The deck is honestly good, no Pidgeot, Drakloak is your engine. I ran unfair stamp and probably still would.

Mela and now Crispin probably have to be 1 ofs. Downside is no room for Duskull line.

I can share the list if you want it.

That’d be great thanks.

Very cool thanks! I love that this variant just uses all the cards I already have.

I’ll be playing this deck on Sunday to a challenge. It is fun and seems to work pretty consistently in limited testing so far. The pult line is more for draw and spread damage(I’ll spread onto big basics that might be out of reach for early zard). I also like to let my opponent get slightly ahead in prize race to activate counter catcher and defiance band.

WaywardWes [OP]

Good luck, I’m interested to hear any particular touch matchups you come across

urboitony

I haven't played it myself but I think you have the right ideas. Some of Dragapults weaknesses is the awkward energy cost and difficulty taking big OHKOs when needed. Zard helps with both of those things, but yeah you are cutting out a proper draw engine and the dusknoir line.

PorradaPanda

I've seen a few people do this, including one person I played against in person.

It works fine. Maybe not quite as smooth as a pure Pult or Zard deck, but it does provide some versatility with two different type of attackers and have share some cards well. I don't think it was bad at all. Yes, the Drakloaks become your draw engine in the Birmingham list.

Pult can be nice against opponents with a big bench (Terapagos, Klawf, Gardevoir, etc.). Zard is great for blasting those big bulky ones (Archaludon, Drago, Lucia, etc.) and coming from behind (damage buff).

For this particular list, I'd be concern with Budew though as it can nullify your items early on(Rare Candy, Tera Orb, Precious Trolley, etc.)

Guh2point0

I did, when you get a quick set up it can take down any deck. I would usually go with the Dragapult as the first attacker. I was able to win a challenge and almost make top cut at cups a few times.

My struggles were bricking due to consistency issues of running 2 stage two attacker (having one piece and rare candy, but missing the matching piece). It was also slower to get going so I would struggle against Regidrago getting to go first or Bolt getting to go 2nd.

WaywardWes [OP]

Thanks for the insight!

Terrible_Produce_562

It feels a little bit too convoluted in the current item lock environment but if Budew goes down in popularity then it could be a shout? I think PultNoir is the way to go.

I think that PultThorns is being slept on a little bit currently as well and may be the deck to play post rotation when Lance goes (that card is pulling a lot of weight right now). It's worst matchup right now is I think PultNoir but that might go down post-rotation?

Salty_Extreme_6741

I placed second in a league cup last week running it. It’s decent but I was just running a 1 - 0 - 1 line of charizard. Otherwise if it’s a fairly normal dragapult dusknoir list

freedomfightre

Yeah, my buddy mains that deck. It's a pain in the ass to deal with.

Ninjaxte

I run what I call Dragazardeot with Pult, zard, and pidgeot. I use grand tree and use it to accelerate my evolutions for pidgeot and pult. I try to set up pult early and then use zard for late game knockouts. Sometimes I have to deal with the hand given though and just use whatever attacker I can set up first. I get more consistency out of it from just pult decks and just zard decks.

TajinAddicted

I'm a new player with a quick question - if you run Grand Tree does that mean Charizards infernal reign ability doesn't trigger since it's not coming from your hand? If so how do you play around that?

Ninjaxte

Correct; you can’t use zard’s energy acceleration with grand tree. I do it by preemptively attaching fire to it if I know I’ll evolve it using GT. If not, I’ll use pidgeot search to get the rare candy and zard to evolve and keep energy acceleration.

TajinAddicted

Awesome - thank you!

whit3blu3

Ítem lock seems to be meta in the new format, so you have to remove the rare candy high-dependency. Lance to 3 drakloak is a very efficient way to not be wasted by budew.

Zard is an excellent late game clearer, but the phantom bombs allow you to take the 6 prizes even in a single turn.

WaywardWes [OP]

Is Lance getting reprinted? It wasn’t on my shopping list since it seemed to be rotating.

whit3blu3

No, it isn't. New format = prismatic expansion, the two upcoming months before rotation.

After lance getting out, I would bet for draga thorns again, through TM EVO and many supporters... Or maybe budew is just a flash, ítem lock disappears within few weeks and rare candy decks are pretty playable.

WaywardWes [OP]

Oh yeah I forgot we have awhile until rotation.

Kered13

It was a reasonably popular deck back in the summer, but since Shrouded Fable there are better ways to play Charizard, and since Stellar Crown there are better ways to play Dragapult. As a result it has fallen out of favor. I imagine it's still playable, if you want, but it's no longer meta.

PsystrikeSmash

I've played a pult/zard build and it's pretty fun, though it makes the deck slightly too cumbersome for my liking. I've also tried the Greninja/Zard deck that Cobi Kawasaki played at whatever regional it was (sacramento I think?) and once again it was very fun and also just a little too cumbersome. While they both synergize with zard very well, I think you're better off just playing one or the other, especially in terms of consistency. If you're playing just one of the two you have a better chance at drawing into the right cards I think.

All that being said, don't let me stop you. It's a very fun deck, though I'd suggest Grand Tree over Trolley. Budew will slow down big stage 2 decks and Grand Tree will alleviate some of the pain caused by that item lock

WaywardWes [OP]

Cool thanks! I’ve got a Grand Tree on order already.

PsystrikeSmash

My favorite play with the deck is Grand Tree duskull into dusknoir, play Briar, pop Dusknoir into a low HP bench pokemon, and then swing with Zard for a total of 4 prizes in one turn. Also a big fan of pop dusknoir, thorton, super rod clops and dusknoir back into the deck, grand tree dusknoir during the early/mid game. Granted, both of those plays are very draw dependent most of the time.

RevTimTCG

It definitely works, used to run it before my new variant and it was always a joy. You should give it a go if it piqued your interest.
