Niantic, where are your community managers?

Where to begin really?

It's been about 3 years since the app launched, and many many times Niantic has made decisions and changes that significant portions of the playerbase has disagreed with. Granted, some of them where justified, taking away certain options that made the game too easy with too little effort spent. But others could've been better implemented through dialogue with players. To me, it seems Niantic are a bit out of touch.

An example could be Dragonite appearing in raids right now. Why did it take so long for it to do so? Dragonite is far less relevant now in the meta than it could've been when raids were first released. Sure, some people perhaps didn't have a Dragonite up until now, so it's not all bad, but the timing to someone who's been at Pokemon Go from the start seems misplaced. Again, just an example, I could go on but that's not the main topic of this complaint (which may come off as an angry rant, but for me it's more of a mix of passion and disappointment really).

So, what's the cause? There are probably many, but the one I'd like to focus on is the lack of communication between Niantic and the players. It's by no means a groundbreaking conclusion, but as nothing big have happened so far it deserves to keep being mentioned. Communication is vital for things to work both on a macro and micro-scale in so many things we do, so why isn't Niantic attempting to do it more?

Some of you may argue that it's not entirely true - that Niantic are in fact communicating with us. And to an extent, that's true. They likely have a word or two on occasion with the big influencers that they sponsor to appear at events, and when a sufficient level of noise is raised through certain channels about the game experiencing errors Niantic listens. But clearly this system isn't perfect. While influencers may know more about the game than most casual players, they don't represent the playerbase as a whole and don't have a monopoly on doing observations and getting ideas on how to improve the game.

This is why I believe a link between us and Niantic -namely community managers etc- is vital for the continued longevity for Pokemon Go. Even Ingress, the other game Niantic developed and which has but a fraction of Pokemon Go's numbers in terms of players, has a dedicated CM. And it works! Several suggestions brought up by the Ingress community during AMAs has (at the very least) been taken into consideration or been introduced into the system - like reasons for portal rejections being stated and upgrades to incentivize players to review more portal submissions. And this is just with ONE person.

There has been at least 2 Niantic employees present in this subreddit and TSR. Disappearing them was a very regrettable decision. Granted this subreddit has in the past been quite vitriolic towards Niantic, but just because a portion of the community steps out of line should not equal pulling the plug on communication altogether. Take some inspiration from Krug and change your methods of communication or something until you find something that works. In the end, this is one of the bigger hubs for Pokemon go I know of on the internet. Surely there must be some beneficial knowledge for you to harvest from here? Things that will make people stick around with the app for longer and probably pay a bit of money every now and then. It's all here for the taking Niantic, unless you'd rather prefer only hearing from us whenever we get angry enough with you over your mistakes and flaws.

If you took the time to read this I salute you.

Their CM was recently interviewed on the Lured Up podcast, and she confirmed they doread reddit (i think I recall her saying every day.)

That's good to hear, but I wish it wasn't so 1-sided.

Nice reference!

You already said it. This sub is a toxic shitfest with next to no constructive criticism. For every 50 posts complaining, theres one half decent idea, and even less actually good ideas. Not worth their time as long as we still play with what theyre doing now.

Velasthur [OP]

Granted, but it's been worse. They also pulled out from TSR which in comparison has been far more civil and constructive. I've heard various reasons as to why /u/nianticgeorge and /u/nianticindigo no longer posts but we won't know for sure unless they speak up which is unlikely at this point. But let's say it was because it is as you said. Is it logical to conclude that everybody else is the same? No.

This sub is

Mod team is trying to change this undercurrent.

Happy for any suggestions (provided they're realistic and don't interfere with our sleep schedules and IRL stuff)

Ha- just knowing you’re making an effort is good enough! Already doing better than other subs

Just because you read Reddit Pokemon subs, doesn't mean the people complaining in those subs represent the player base. The Pokemon Go player base is massive and a small fraction of it read Reddit at all. Niantic makes decisions based on player data and analytics from the game. Run an event, see how the player base responds. That's how it really works.

They might read Reddit as another poster stated - but they sure aren't going to respond anymore and I don't blame them. The only people posting are just toxic and nothing given in the game is ever good enough.

Very true.

During the 10k km research our sister sub /r/pokemongotrades saw a huge flood of Japanese trainers (to the point that other users expected spambots having taken over the sub).

Between TSR and us I think we barely have 1% of the trainers worldwide (they are dedicated trainers though and their input can be very useful even if hard to quantify into metrics & KPIs)

Sure. I don't disagree - they're input can be useful.

The problem is, they see things from only one perspective, which isn't representative of the entire playing base. Looking at it another way, consider that like most things, they fall within a bell curve, from one extreme - a hardcore, grind everything player, to the other, a super casual player who maybe plays once a week. Now considering all that - who's opinion is more important? Which is why when we're reading this sub, it tends to be a certain type of player always posting demands/complaints, most are the silent majority, and most likely the reason Niantic doesn't bother responding anymore. Appreciate your reply, modding can't be easy... or fun for that matter.

In Ingress there is a community manager that is active on TG and posts info news etc about different stuff, why isnt there such someone active that u see for pogo news etc ??

marblebag

Most of the subreddit is whining so there's no much work for CM to do here.

Wait, Niantic have community managers?

liehon

Granted this subreddit has in the past been ...

Mod team is implementing changes that will hopefully promote fan art, creativity and OC and dissuade vitriol and repetitive complaints.

Restoring contact with CMs is also on the list.

Take some inspiration from Krug

Haven't followed up with Krug's community interactions in months now, has he done any new things we'd like to see ported over?

Velasthur [OP]

Nothing drastic beyond what you probably already know. But he does hold monthly AMAs on Niantics official Ingress forums, formerly via google+. Now that seems to work really well, probably in part because of the Ingress community being smaller than the PoGo one, but who's to say something similar couldn't be implemented for PoGo? If not here then at least let this be the catalyst for it. The biggest issue will likely be lots and lots of people just trolling or asking the same questions over and over, but I'm sure something could be done in a dialogue with Niantic if they wanted it to happen.
