So cool! I used to live in Charleston and a friend of mine there found these a few times...where did you find this beauty?

This particular one came from near Summerville.

Ok?

That’s incredible

Should make a shark tooth necklace out of it. It would be the Flava Flave of shark tooth necklaces.

tiberiusrussell

It's pronounced "Flava Flave" but it's really spelled "Flavor Flave." He really doesn't like his name being misspelled.

[deleted]

How did it end up in a SC creek? Was there a time it was underwater in the last 25 million years?

[deleted]

No. South Carolina was a big vacation spot for prehistoric fish back in the day. Meg would spend his summers there. SMDH.

An SC creek could mean intercoastal areas that are just a few miles from the shore. Besides there were still fluctuations in the sea level on the Atlantic coastal plain through the tertiary period. They can probably be found at least 10 miles from shore or so I would guess, maybe more I'm no expert. From what I can tell the water was probably high enough during the time of Miocene megalodon. This creek is likely very close to the modern shoreline but may be further inland than you think.

This is the most comprehensive source I could find. They list some more scholarly sources at the bottom.

What an astounding find!!

Wonder how the flat earthers that think the world is 6k years old explain these haha

TossinCircles

I have had many conversations with flat earthers and creationists concerning the age of fossils. They ask me "is that in human years?" Haha... as opposed to what!?

Just try to explain carbon dating to someone like that and they glaze over when the cognitive dissonance kicks in.

[deleted]

Carbon dating is circular logic at it's best.

What do you do when the C14 dates something that can't be more than a couple hundred years old at several hundred thousand, or more?

Cognitive dissonance huh? I'd call you on that bluff... Considering modern science gives carbon dating a maximum accuracy of 62k years at best.

Anything older and it's a crapshoot.

Back to the old "this fossil a gojillion years old because we found it in this geoillogical layer"...

"Yeah but, how do you know the age of the layer"?

"...because we found this fossil in it that has to be a gojillion years old otherwise it doesn't fit the theory we teach as fact so as to desperately rule out a Creator".

Evolutionism is just as ripe with ignorance as anything else. Science points to design, not random chance. Downvote me as you wish, I consider it an honor.

TossinCircles

Lmao this is great you felt triggered enough to reply!

When I'm showing people fossils that are "400 million years old" (I put it like that so you can sleep tonight) 62k years +/- accuracy is pretty fucking okay with me. What does your book say is a more accurate way of dating fossils? Or do you believe fossils were put here by the devil to test our faith? I have heard that one too!

As for "what I do" when carbon dating has an anomaly as you suggested was common... like the rest of the scientific community I look for ways of higher accuracy and scientific advances provide that. I know that the "theory of evolution" is not 100% accurate... hint hint the scientific community refers to it as a THEORY. or is that too ripe with ignorance?

As for calling my bluff (lol) I would love to show you examples of cognitive dissonance I have experienced during the "THE BIBLE SAYS THE EARTH IS 6000 YEARS OLD" or "CARBON DATING IS FLAWED" discussion.... but since I can't show you I just ask you have a little faith that it happened. ;)

[deleted]

No see, you don'tt understand... What I said was carbon dating is innacurate for anything beyond 62k years old (max). I wasn't referring to a margin of error. We must be able to interpret what we read to be considered intelligent.

The rest of what you said, you're pandering to strangers as if you know what we believe.

No, I'm not interested in speculations based on the presumption of the intent of a supernatural being. I believe the historical nature of "my book" clearly explains where your "400 million year old" fossil came from. As well as your sedimentary layers, etc.

Like you, I lack the time, willingness, or desire to convince you, as you've clearly made your bed in the camp I used to be in. All I will say is when there are more unanswered questions and theories than facts and finalities, I would question the motives of those feeding me the line.

So long friend.

OogoniuM

Unanswered questions and theories over facts? Let’s just take a moment and look at the history of Christianity why don’t we. Unanswered prayers and greed is all I see. How many millions of people have died throughout history because of religion? Religion divides us. That’s a fact.

[deleted]

I'm not a flat earther, but we creationists explain this by way of a global flood.

MontanaMayor

No suprise that'll get downvoted to hell

[deleted]

Worth it. Good thing Reddit Karma is worth about as much as Monopoly money.

That global food that drowned all the 40ft long sharks with 6 inch teeth that are made of stone?

[deleted]

Landlocked then beached them as the waters subsided.

Fossilization doesn't always take "millions of years".
