This myth has been busted so many times it's ridiculous. He wasn't cut from the Sophomore team. He simply did not make varsity as a sophomore. Many schools have a rule that underclassmen cannot play varsity (mine did).

Plus he was only like 5'9", so wouldn't have been an elite SG even at the varsity high school level. It wasn't until he got another year of experience and physical growth that he would really dominate.
