As someone from San Francisco... $80k for a single adult with no kids is not even close to poverty wages. People need to stop parroting this.

I'm not saying $80k is enough to thrive, especially with a child. But you will be able to rent and eat. It won't be glamorous and you will have to budget - but you can do it on those wages. That's not poverty. Poverty is where you cannot budget yourself into room and board and meals. Actual impoverished people have always existed and still do in San Francisco proper, who make way less than that. All this rhetoric treating $80k as poverty is detrimental to the truly impoverished in this city, both in terms of societal empathy and policy action.

And as someone who lives in DC, people making $120k absolutely do not need roommates if they don't want to. They just won't be living in the trendy areas. People exist in places like ivy city and glover park. People crying about making $120k in DC are some of the most fucking entitled people I've ever met.

But even then it took me years to catch up to the ACA impacte and finer details. Then Trump came in and changed so much, often objectively for the worse from a patient perspective. You're not going to like this but the truth is on a combined 50k you can afford the the health insurance, and probably pay off your 20% interest credit card balance within two or three years. It's going to suck and it's not going to require a lot of sacrifice on your part. I know the feeling of having debt hanging over your head.
