Opposite of "code in the dark" challenge?

A few years ago I participated in a "code in the dark" type challenge (where you write the css and html to replicate a design in ~15 minutes but you can't see what your code outputs until the end).

A few days ago I read on reddit or hackernews about a similar type of challenge but with the idea behind it sort of reversed, named "code in the light" or "code in the white" or something similar, but I can't remember the core concept of it or how exactly it's named. Google really doesn't want to help me :(

Does anyone here know what I'm talking about or point me in some direction? Thanks

You have to use a light theme for your IDE for 15 minutes

These are eyes we're talking about here.

Your knowledge of torture is daunting.

I mean I imagine there's a twist somewhere. Perhaps it's the complete opposite, you can ONLY look at the output without looking at your code? But that becomes just a memory game at that point lol

yes, but there was a twist to it that I can't remember :(

Maybe: you can't see what code you're writing?

The font color matches the ide background color?

Then it's just a "know your keyboard" challenge.

Wouldn't the inverse just be to mock up a design based on the code in 15 mins?

I can't be 100% sure it was this, but it may be a hint in the right direction. Thank you!

Perhaps trying to match a completed design to snippets of code?

Hmmm, it may have been something like "see the design, then match the code". Thanks for the suggestion, might help in my searches!

I think this is basically what you’re referring to. I’ve had to do something like this. Basically they gave me a basic web page with a few functional features like buttons, forms, etc. I had to reverse engineer the page layout and functionality without seeing any of the code or inspecting the HTML.

It’s sort of similar to coding in the dark, in the sense that you don’t really know the “right answer.” But it moves the goal post to something a bit more realistic. These days, especially in web dev, almost any piece of code can be tested rapidly on the fly, so why force an impractical situation?

not really coding but I guess the other way around would be looking at the code for 15 minutes and trying to mockup/draw the design

This sound like a good suggestion too! Thanks!

I would assume you look at the html/css and create the design from it sketch/figma/whatever.
