It actually happened 7 years earlier in 1954, when Local Freedom fighters who wanted to join with India teamed up with 2 different groups- the CPI, and another who I will mention later

Between the two of them, they gathered more than 2 lakh volunteers, and prepared to storm Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

At this time, Partially because Nehru still wanted a diplomatic resolution and partially because the INC wanted to curb the influence of the CPI, they had the leaders arrested just before they could do so. Thankfully, the other group took charge

Who is this other group you might ask? It’s the RSS.

Somehow the Goan freedom fighters manned to get both the CPI and the RSS on the same page. Crazy in itself.

The combined forces of the RSS CPI and the local freedom fingers would surround the Portuguese forces and force them to retreat.

Captain Fidalgo, the Portuguese in charge of defence would attempt to concentrate his forces into a single town as a last ditch effort to hold onto the territory, but the rebels attacked so hard that he was forced to retreat

On 11th August 1954, he would cross the Daman Ganga river into Indian territory and surrender to the police.

For a while, it was governed partially by the RSS and partially by local freedom fighters leaders until 1961 when it formally joined the Republic

The sun was going down. It painted the sky in various colours. I saw orange and yellow, with the occasional tint of green and purple
