I think setting the show at a real club would've probably been impossible and limiting for the show. I'd be very surprised if any Premier League team would give them permission. Liverpool for example declined to even be featured in the show for whatever reason. I could be wrong but I think that episode then became the one set during an away game at Everton, Liverpool's local rivals. Palace were probably just the Richmond 'template' that fit best, but a few other similar sized London clubs like Brentford and Fulham could've worked well too.
On the plus side Spurs have been funny enough without Ted for the past year (to be fair I'm watching them right now and they're doing alright against Chelsea).

I think because Palace are a South London club (we're SE London, Richmond is SW) of a similar size and 'level' as the fictional Richmond. We're not the biggest or most popular London club and only won our first trophies in 150 years last season. Richmond are underdogs and for most of our history we have been too. We had our best ever season last year, had to sell almost all our best players and will be fighting relegation this year the way things have started.
We don't have the trophy cabinet of an Arsenal or Chelsea but then luckily we don't have their plastic 'supporters' either. We're also not as posh as the real Richmond (Fulham are though) so maybe another reason is that we're cheap!

I'd forgotten about that one, might be time for a rewatch!

As a Palace supporter from the area I've enjoyed all the little nods and mentions of Crystal Palace, seeing as they film the Nelson Road scenes at our stadium Selhurst Park. Richmond's colours are based on ours, the first game featured in the show was a defeat to Palace, but the one that sold the show to me was playing "Glad All Over" over the credits of the second episode, as it's the music that Palace come out to at home games.
That music choice won't have meant much to most people watching but it was meaningful to some of us!

Found out that his glasses are from Cubitts while looking for a new pair recently. Unsure if that's an endorsement of the brand or not.

"Perhaps what you need is a torniquet lesson".
Missed opportunity to call the show I Am Wounded.

The struggle of having to pay £80 for the version of the game with all the content is bad enough

It's the first annual Leo Messi award for outstanding achievement in the field of Messiness

Genuinely shocked by this now, getting 7 is rare enough but never would've imagined it against Croatia

"Well done, he's 13"

Think the England kit just became the must-have Halloween costume for Croatian kids

There are sections of this crowd that can't even count to 5 (and yes some of them might be English)
AStrangeNorrell
Might've been a bigger punishment to let the home fans attend this
AStrangeNorrell
Think it's musical statues with some of the kids

Good old 'arry knows a thing or two about dodgy deals after all

Not having been relegated from the top flight in about 75 year is an even greater one

He's fit now but "load managing" and he was fit when he pulled out in March last year too - so much so that he started and played the full 90 for Chelsea a week later. In fact the only time he was unarguably injured was when he pulled out in November last year.
I want to see him play for England too but Tuchel's right to call him out.
AStrangeNorrell
That would be all well and good if this was the only England squad Palmer had pulled out of but it's not - this is the fifth time. And when he did it in March last year he then played the full 90 for Chelsea on the 3rd April. So yes he's had genuine injuries to manage since but there's also a pattern of him doing this that goes back as far as Carsley.
AStrangeNorrell
Except he hasn't - he's pulled out of three of Tuchel's squads now and two of Carsley's before that
AStrangeNorrell
I'm angry every time Zelda's onscreen so case closed I think
AStrangeNorrell
We're not talking about GOATs we're talking about whether Palmer is a world class level player - and if he was fit he would've done just fine at the World Cup in the summer. Pretty sure most international teams would be happy to have him. But he doesn't seem to want to turn up for internationals even when he is fit, and Tuchel is right to call him out on it.

The guy who came off the bench to score in a Euros final against Spain isn't world class? Maybe he's just European class.
Would love to see a dictator Mbappe tifo appear at their next game.
