Buying a starter home, as you described it, is probably a bad idea. Buying property you mean to live in isn’t a sound financial investment, typically you’d get more money renting & investing the extra savings.

As such, your first house should be one you want to live in long term & make a home! There are plenty of reasons to want to, they’re just sentimental/social not economic.

Through this lens, wanting your first home to fit your needs makes total sense.
